Kemble Family
Kemble is the name of a family of English actors, who reigned over the English stage for many decades. The most famous were Sarah Siddons (1755–1831) and her brother John Philip Kemble (1757–1823), the two eldest of the twelve children of Roger Kemble (1721–1802), a strolling player and manager of the Warwickshire Company of Comedians, who in 1753 married an actress, Sarah Ward. Roger Kemble was born in Hereford, and was a grand-nephew of Father John Kemble, a recusant Catholic priest, who was hanged in that city in 1679. Three younger children of Roger, Stephen Kemble (1758–1822), Charles Kemble (1775–1854), and Elizabeth Whitlock (1761–1836), were also actors, while Ann Hatton was a novelist. Maria Theresa Kemble
Maria Theresa Kemble (1774–1838), née Marie Thérèse Du Camp, was an Archduchy of Austria-born English actress, singer, dancer and comic playwright on the stage. She was the wife of actor Charles Kemble and mother of Fanny Kemble, part of the Kemble acting dynasty. Early life She was the daughter of Jeanne Dufour and George De Camp who were both performers. She was born in Vienna, Archduchy of Austria, Holy Roman Empire on 17 January 1774 and brought to England where she appeared as Cupid at the age of six years old in Jean-Georges Noverre's ballet at the Opera House. She spoke no English and learned the language herself although she was tutored in other subjects. Two years later she appeared in ''La Colombe'' by Madame de Genlis. William Beechey
Sir William Beechey (12 December 175328 January 1839) was a British portraitist during the golden age of British painting. Early life Beechey was born at Burford, Oxfordshire, on 12 December 1753, the son of William Beechey, a solicitor, and his wife Hannah Read. Both parents died when he was still quite young in the early 1760s, and he and his siblings were brought up by his uncle Samuel, a solicitor who lived in nearby Chipping Norton. The uncle was determined that the young Beechey should likewise follow a career in the law, and at an appropriate age he was entered as a clerk with a conveyancer near Stow-on-the-Wold. ''Portrait of John Philip Kemble'' is a 1799 portrait painting by the British artist William Beechey depicting the stage actor John Philip Kemble. Kemble came from a celebrated family of actors and earned fame in London's West End, often appearing alongside his sister Sarah Siddons. He was at the height of his fame when he sat for William Beechey, a leading portraitist and prominent member of the Royal Academy. The painting was commissioned by the French art dealer Noël Desenfans. Unlike most depictions of Kemble which show him in the character of one of the various roles he played, Beechey's portrait depicts the actor as himself. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy's 1799 Summer Exhibition at Somerset House. The painting is now in the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London having been part of the 1811 bequest by Francis Bourgeois. Jane Beadon
Vera Jane Siddons Beadon, formerly Jarvis and Whigham, (née Corby; 4 December 1913 – 30 June 1999) was a Scottish socialite, heiress, and actress. She was known as the leading witness in the internationally publicized 1963 divorce case between her stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll and Ian Campbell, 11th Duke of Argyll. Beadon, who was accused of having an affair with the Duke of Argyll by her stepdaughter, successfully sued the duchess for libel, slander, and conspiracy to suborn perjury. Beadon testified in court on behalf of the duke, presenting evidence supporting the duke's claim that the duchess had engaged in extramarital affairs. At the time of her death in 1999, she was the last surviving participant in the Argyll divorce case. Lillian Kemble-Cooper (21 March 1892 – 4 May 1977) was an English-American actress who had a successful career on Broadway and in Hollywood film. Biography Early life Lillian Kemble-Cooper was a member of the Kemble family from England. She was born as a daughter of stage actor Frank Kemble-Cooper. Alice Barnett
Alice Barnett (17 May 1846 – 14 April 1901) was an English singer and actress, best known for her performances in contralto roles of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Barnett began her career by 1873 in oratorio and other concert work. Using her imposing physical stature to her advantage, she originated several of the early Gilbert and Sullivan "formidable middle-aged ladies", namely Ruth in ''The Pirates of Penzance'' (1879), Lady Jane in ''Patience (opera), Patience'' (1881) and the Fairy Queen in ''Iolanthe'' (1882). Henry Kemble (actor, Born 1848)
Henry Kemble (1 June 1848 – 17 November 1907) was a British actor. A member of the famed Kemble family, he was the grandson of Charles Kemble. Life He was born in London, the son of Henry Kemble, a captain of the 37th Foot, and educated at Maze Hill School Greenwich, King's College School and King's College London. In 1865 he took a post in the privy council office, but spent much of his time in amateur theatre, before making his professional début at the Theatre Royal, Dublin, on 7 October 1867. After a year or so as a junior member of the company there, he took old men and character parts in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scarborough and Newcastle upon Tyne.
