Kayl
Kayl ( or locally ) is a Communes of Luxembourg, commune and town in south-western Luxembourg. It is part of the Esch-sur-Alzette (canton), canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. , the town of Kayl, which lies in the centre of the commune, has a population of 5,856. Other towns within the commune include Tétange. The first surviving written reference to 'Keyle' dates from 1235. Since the thirteenth century the name of the town has not changed significantly, although more than twenty different spellings have been identified. The town is the location of the Montenegro honorary consulate in Luxembourg. Esch-sur-Alzette (canton)
Esch-sur-Alzette () is a canton in southwestern Luxembourg. It is both the second most populous and second most densely populated canton after the canton of Luxembourg. It borders Belgium & France. History Like the other cantons of Luxembourg, the canton of Esch dates back to 31 August 1795. However, it was created under the name of the canton of Soleuvre. This term was of short duration since, already on 22 October 1796, a new decree renamed it the canton of Bascharage. Bascharage canton was less spread-out than the current canton of Esch since Leudelange, Pontpierre, Bettembourg and Dudelange belonged to the canton of Hesperange, created to the south of the capital. Bascharage canton, on the other hand, included Marner, which is now in Capellen canton. Esch-sur-Alzette (, ; ; or ''Esch an der Alzig'') is a city in Luxembourg and the country's List of communes of Luxembourg by population, second-most populous commune, with a population of 36,625 inhabitants, . It lies in the south-west of the country, on the border with France and in the valley of the Alzette, which flows through the city. Dudelange
Dudelange (; ; ) is a commune with town status in southern Luxembourg. It is the fourth-most populous commune, with 22,043 inhabitants. Dudelange is situated close to the border with France. The commune also includes the smaller town of Budersberg, to the north-west. The Mont Saint-Jean, close to Budersberg, hosts the ruins of a medieval castle. In 1794 the French Revolutionary Army committed atrocities against the local population in Dudelange, when they massacred 79 civilians. Bettembourg
Bettembourg (; , ; , ) is a commune and town in southern Luxembourg. The country's eighth-most populous commune, it is part of the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. , the town of Bettembourg, which lies in the east of the commune, has a population of 9,160. Other towns within the commune include Abweiler, Fennange, Huncherange, and Noertzange. The Parc Merveilleux children's amusement park is located just outside Bettembourg. Bettembourg Castle, located in the centre of the town, has a history starting in 1733 when it was built as the residence of a farming family. Today it houses the offices and services of the local commune and acts as the town hall of Bettembourg. Schifflange
Schifflange (; , , , ) is a commune and town in south-western Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. , the commune has a population of 11,363. Schifflange was formed on 15 August 1876, when it was detached from the commune of Esch-sur-Alzette. The law forming Schifflange was passed on the 6 July 1876. Steelworks A steelworks in Schifflange was founded in 1871 by the Metz family as ''Usine METZ (Esch-Schifflange)'', the steelworks became part of ARBED in 1911. In the 1980s the plant was converted to the continuous casting of blooms, then in the 1990s an electric furnace installed. In 1994 the company merged with the Belgian company '' Métallurgique et Minière de Rodange-Athus'' (MMRA) forming ARES (''Aciéries Rodange Esch-Schifflange''). Edy Schütz (born 15 May 1941) is a Luxembourgish former professional road bicycle racer. In 1964, Schütz rode in the individual road race at the 1964 Olympic Games. From 1966 to 1971 he was six times the Luxembourgish national road race champion. In 1966, he won a stage in the 1966 Tour de France. Jean-Pierre Nuel
Jean-Pierre Nuel (February 27, 1847 – August 21, 1920) was a Luxembourgish- Belgian ophthalmologist and physiologist who was a native of Tétange. In 1870 he earned his doctorate from the University of Ghent, and became licensed to practice surgery and gynecology in Luxembourg. Subsequently, he opened a private practice in the town of Eich (today part of Luxembourg City) and furthered his education in Vienna, Bonn and Utrecht. During this time period, his interest shifted to ophthalmology, and he was particularly inspired by the work of Franciscus Donders (1818–1889) at Utrecht. In 1877 Nuel became a professor of ophthalmology in Louvain, and later a professor of physiology in Ghent (1880). In 1885 he attained the chair of ophthalmology and physiology of sensory organs at Liège.
