Kanta-Häme
Kanta-Häme (; ), sometimes referred to as Tavastia Proper, is a Regions of Finland, region (, ) of Finland. It borders the regions of Southwest Finland, Pirkanmaa, Päijänne Tavastia, Päijät-Häme, and Uusimaa (region), Uusimaa. Before the official adoption of the name ''Kanta-Häme'' in 1998, the region was commonly known as Häme. Hämeenlinna is the largest urban area in the region. There are two other municipalities of Finland, municipalities that have township status: Riihimäki and Forssa. Historical provinces The Kanta-Häme region has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Hämeenlinna (; ; ; or ''Croneburgum'') is a city in Finland and the regional capital of Kanta-Häme. It is located in the southern interior of the country and on the shores of Vanajavesi, Lake Vanajavesi. Tavastia (historical Province)
Tavastia (; ; ; also called ''Yam'' (Ямь) or ''Yem'' (Емь) in Russian sources) is a historical province in the south of Finland. It borders Finland Proper, Satakunta, Ostrobothnia, Savonia and Uusimaa. History The province has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Forssa is a Cities of Finland, town and municipalities of Finland, municipality of Finland. Pirkanmaa (; ; ), also known as ''Tampere Region'' in government documents, is a region of Finland. It borders the regions of Satakunta, South Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme and Southwest Finland. Häme Castle
Häme Castle or Tavastia Castle (, ) is a medieval castle in Tavastia Proper, Finland. It is located in Hämeenlinna, the city between Helsinki and Tampere. Originally located on an island, the castle now sits on the coast of lake Vanajavesi. The castle consists of a central keep and surrounding curtain walls, enclosed by a moat. The keep originally had five turrets, but only two are apparent today. The curtain wall has a gatehouse, battlements, an octagonal brick corner turret, and a round gun turret. The lower tiers of the keep and curtain wall are of masoned granite and the upper tiers are red brickwork. Although the exact date is disputed, the castle is generally considered to have been constructed in the 13th century. Riihimäki (; ) is a town and municipality in the south of Finland, about north of Helsinki and southeast of Tampere. An important railway junction is located in Riihimäki, since railway tracks from Riihimäki lead to Helsinki, Tampere and Lahti. Several businesses also operate in Riihimäki.
