Kalamata ( ) is the second most populous city of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece after Patras, and the largest city of the homonymous administrative region. As the capital and chief port of the Messenia regional unit, it lies along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf. The 2021 census recorded 72,906 inhabitants for the wider Kalamata Municipality, of which 66,135 resided in the municipal unit of Kalamata, and 58,816 in the city proper. Kalamata is renowned as the land of the Kalamatianos dance, Kalamata olives and Kalamata olive oil. Name The modern name ''Kalamáta'' likely comes from ; another hypothesis is a corruption of the older name . Archaeological Museum Of Messenia
The Archaeological Museum of Messenia is located in Kalamata, the capital of Messenia in southern Greece. It is in located in 3, Agiou Ioanni street. The museum is built on the site of the city's old market hall. Among else its collection includes the finds which were formerly kept in the Benakeion Archaeological Museum of Kalamata, a remarkable 1742 building of Venetian architecture which collapsed during the 1986 Kalamata earthquake, 1986 earthquake. The new museum holds antiquities from Messenia from prehistoric and Mycenaean Greece, Mycenaean times to the Byzantine and Principality of Achaia, Latin eras, divided along the four geographic areas that traditionally made up Messenia: Kalamata, Messene, Pylos, Pylia and Triphylia. Mikri Mantineia
Mikri Mantineia () is a seaside village in the municipality of Kalamata, Messenia, Greece. It is situated at 20 m above sea level, on the northeastern shore of the Gulf of Messenia. Its main industry is tourism. Mikri Mantineia is 2 km northeast of Avia, 3 km north of Megali Mantineia and 6 km southeast of Kalamata. Population History The village was probably founded in the second half of the 17th century in an inland location which is now known as ''Palio Chorio''. It was first mentioned in 1700 as ''Chora Mikri'' ("small village"), as opposed to the older and larger Megali Mantineia. It had 35 families (165 people) in 1700 and 31 in 1703 which produced around 3,204 okades of oil (4,178 kg). It became a part of the municipality of Avia in 1835. In the early 20th century, a small part of the population moved into the nearby beach areas of ''Mourti'', ''Panitsa'' and ''Myloi''. It had 157 inhabitants in 1851, 183 in 1879 and 173 in 1907.
