Jacanidae
The jacanas (sometimes referred to as Jesus birds or lily trotters) are a group of tropical waders in the family (biology), family Jacanidae. They are found in the tropical regions around the world. They are noted for their elongated toes and toenails that allow them to spread out their weight while foraging on floating or semi-emergent aquatic vegetation. They are also among the somewhat rare groups of birds in which females are larger, and several species maintain Polyandry in animals, harems of males in the breeding season with males solely responsible for incubating eggs and taking care of the chicks. Taxonomy The family Jacanidae was introduced in 1854 by the French naturalists Jean-Charles Chenu and Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet des Murs, Marc des Murs. They used the spelling "Jacaneinae". The modern spelling "Jacanidae" was used by Leonhard Stejneger in 1885. The pronunciation of the word jacana is debated. ''Jacana'' is Linnæus' binomial nomenclature, scientific Latin s ...

Jacana (genus)
''Jacana'' is the genus comprising the two Jacanidae, jacanas of the Americas: the northern jacana (''Jacana spinosa)'', and the wattled jacana (''Jacana jacana)''. Taxonomy The genus ''Jacana'' was introduced by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760 with the wattled jacana (''Jacana jacana'') as the type species. Description The two species are very similar to each other: about long, with long necks and fairly long yellow bills. Adults are black and chestnut-brown, with pale yellow-green flight feathers that contrast conspicuously when a bird flies. Their legs are long and grayish, and as in all jacanas, their toes are extremely long for walking on aquatic vegetation such as lily pads. They have frontal shields (like those of coots) and wattle (anatomy), wattles; differences in these are the most noticeable differences between the species. Juveniles are brown above and white below, with a buff-white stripe above the eye and a dark stripe behind it. The dar ...

Jacana, Victoria
Jacana () is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Hume local government area. Jacana recorded a population of 2,187 at the 2021 census. Jacana is located north of the Western Ring Road, south of Johnstone Street and between the Craigieburn railway line and Moonee Ponds Creek. History The name Jacana was applied to an area between Broadmeadows and Glenroy in the 1950s by the Housing Commission of Victoria (HCV). The name comes from Jacana Avenue, to the east of the Craigieburn railway line (therefore, technically not ''in'' Jacana itself). Both the street and the suburb are slightly to the north of the Jacana railway station, which was built to service the suburb in 1959. However, Jacana as a built landscape did not spring fully formed under the aegis of the HCV. The streets in the southern section of Jacana were laid out in 1923, when 861 lots were offered for sale on land which had formerly ...

Jacana Railway Station
Jacana railway station is a commuter railway station on the Craigieburn line, part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the northern suburb of Glenroy in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Jacana station is a ground-level unstaffed station, featuring an island platform. It opened on 15 February 1959. The North East standard gauge line is located to the west of the station, crossing the broad gauge suburban lines via a flyover at the Craigieburn ( down) end of the station. The Albion-Jacana freight line joins the main suburban line after the flyover, and the Western Ring Road passes under the station via a short tunnel. History Jacana station opened on 15 February 1959, a number of years before the Housing Commission started construction of its nearby Jacana estate. The station, like the suburb itself, appears to get its name from a nearby street in neighbouring Broadmeadows. The railway past the site of Jacana originally opened in 1872, as part of the North Eas ...

Jaçanã (district Of São Paulo)
Jaçanã () is a district of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It constitutes with Tremembé the subprefecture Jaçanã-Tremembé, marking the northern boundaries of the city. Like Parelheiros, most of the area of this borough is rural, although in the southern areas there is an urban area. It contains the Cantareira Park, the largest native urban forest in the world. In 1870, the borough was known as Uroguapira because it was thought that there was gold ( Portuguese ''ouro'') in the area. As this was only a rumor, the name given by the aboriginal people for the region of the Cantareira was shortened to Guapira. On 1 June 1930, the name of the borough was changed to Jaçanã (a bird known in English as the wattled jacana). The borough of Jaçanã became known not only in São Paulo, but also in diverse parts of Brazil because of the song " Trem das Onze", by Adoniran Barbosa. In 1949 Jaçanã became the site of the first film studio of São Paulo: the Cinematographic Company M ...
