iHeartMedia, Inc., formerly CC Media Holdings, Inc., is an American mass media corporation headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. It is the holding company of iHeartCommunications, Inc. (formerly Clear Channel Communications, Inc.), a company founded by Lowry Mays and Red McCombs, B. J. "Red" McCombs in 1972, and later taken private by Bain Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners through a leveraged buyout in 2008. As a result of this buyout, Clear Channel Communications, Inc., began to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of CC Media Holdings, Inc. On September 16, 2014, CC Media Holdings, Inc. was rebranded iHeartMedia, Inc., and Clear Channel Communications, Inc., became iHeartCommunications, Inc. KMOD-FM (97.5 MHz) is a mainstream rock radio station in Tulsa, Oklahoma, owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. The station plays a wide variety of rock music from the 1960s through today. Its studios are located at the Tulsa Event Center in Southeast Tulsa and its transmitter site is on the Osage Reservation. KMOD-FM broadcasts in the HD digital format. History KOCW signed on September 30, 1959. It was owned by Grayhill, Inc.; in 1960, Claude Hill bought out partner Meridith Gray. KOCW was sold to Dawson Communications/Turnpike Broadcasting Corporation in 1968 and became KMOD on April 15 of that year. Clear Channel acquired the station in 1973 out of bankruptcy. KAKC (1300 AM) is a conservative talk radio station in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. Its studios are located at the Tulsa Event Center in Southeast Tulsa and its transmitter site is near Broken Arrow. History The original KAKC calls were on 970 in Tulsa from the 1950s through 1980 during which time the station was owned by S. Carl Mark. It was the top rated station in Tulsa during many of those years despite having less transmitter power than its competitors. In 1985, KBBJ 1300 picked up the KAKC call letters and flipped from a MOR/Standards format to a satellite-based Oldies format. 1300 over the years has been a country music, R&B-disco, album rock, adult contemporary, news-talk, Spanish music, sports, and business news station. WOAI (1200 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in San Antonio, Texas, which airs a news/talk format. It is owned and operated by locally based iHeartMedia, Inc., and is that company's flagship station. Studios are located in the Stone Oak neighborhood in Far North San Antonio. Its non-directional antenna transmitter site is off Santa Clara Road in Zuehl, Texas. WOAI promotion refers to the station as the "50,000 Watt Blowtorch" of South Texas. It is a Class A clear-channel station, broadcasting fulltime at the U.S. maximum power of 50,000 watts. In the daytime, WOAI covers most of Central and South Texas, providing at least secondary coverage as far north as the Waco suburbs and as far south as Corpus Christi. Lester Lowry Mays (July 24, 1935 – September 12, 2022) was an American businessman. He was the founder and chairman of Clear Channel Communications. Early years Mays was born in Houston on July 24, 1935. His father, Lester T. Mays, was an executive in the steel industry and died in a car accident when Mays was twelve; his mother, Mary Virginia Lowry, became a real estate agent after her husband's death. Mays was raised in University Park in suburban Dallas, where he attended Highland Park High School. He then studied at the A&M College of Texas (now Texas A&M University), where he received a Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. The earliest experimental AM transmissions began in the early 1900s. Port Arthur, Texas
Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small, uninhabited portion extends into Orange County; it is east of Houston. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery, is located in Port Arthur. The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census, down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. A clear-channel station is an AM radio station in North America that has the highest protection from interference from other stations, particularly concerning night-time skywave propagation. The system exists to ensure the viability of cross-country or cross-continent radio service enforced through a series of treaties and statutory laws. Known as Class A stations since 1982, they are occasionally still referred to by their former classifications of Class I-A (the highest classification), Class I-B (the next highest class), or Class I-N (for stations in Alaska too far away to cause interference to the primary clear-channel stations in the lower 48 states).
