Hypotrix
''Hypotrix'' is a genus of moths of the family Noctuidae. Taxon The genus ''Hypotrix'' (Achille Guenée, Guenée, 1852) originally included 23 species from southern Mexico to Brazil and Peru. In 2010, based on genital character and novel genetic information, 11 species of ''Trichorthosia'' (Augustus Radcliffe Grote, Grote, 1883), one species of ''Trichagrotis'' (James Halliday McDunnough, McDunnough 1929), and four species from ''Hexorthodes'' (McDunnough, 1929) were brought in to form the revised genus ''Hypotrix''. Diagnotics In females, the most prominent diagnostic character for the genus is the form of the anal papillae, which is "swollen and bulbous basally, then abruptly tapered to a narrow pointed apex". In preserved specimens, this papillae often curves below the end of the abdomen to project anteriorly, sometimes by as much as 180 degrees. The most notable diagnotic for males is the "membranous flap arising from the middle of the sacculus and partially overtopping the ...

Hypotrix Lunata
''Hypotrix lunata'' is a moth of the family Noctuidae. It is found in the range of Arizona to northern Mexico. The length of the forewings is 15–17 mm and the wingspan The wingspan (or just span) of a bird or an airplane is the distance from one wingtip to the opposite wingtip. For example, the Boeing 777–200 has a wingspan of , and a wandering albatross (''Diomedea exulans'') caught in 1965 had a wingsp ... is about 31 mm. Description It is a relatively large moth that is superficially unlike any other species in North America. It is most closely related to '' Hypotrix quindiensis'' (Draudt, 1924) that was originally described as a form of H. lunata; it occurs from Colombia to Peru. ''Hypotrix lunata'' differs from ''H. quindiensis'' in having a smaller orbicular spot (the two sides of the black mark formed by the fusion of the spots are similar in size in ''H. quindiensis''), the postmedial line is an even black line (an irregular series of black dashes in ...

Hypotrix Ferricola
''Hypotrix ferricola'' is a moth of the family Noctuidae first described by Smith in 1905. It is found in southern North America from south-eastern Arizona, south-western New Mexico and northern Mexico. Description ''Hypotrix ferricola'' features an unmistakeable orange and black streaked forewing pattern. ''H. ferricola'' is closely related to the mexican ''Hypotrix'' ''aselenographa'' (Dyar, 1916); the two can be distinguished using the subterminal line, which on ''H. ferricola'' runs parallel to the wing margin before curving out near the forewing apex (on ''H. aselenographa'' it is nearly straight to the forewing). ''H. ferricola'' also features visible orbicular and reniform spots; on ''H. aselenographa'' these spots are completely obscured. Ecology and behavior Most records are from ponderosa pine ''Pinus ponderosa'', commonly known as the ponderosa pine, bull pine, blackjack pine, western yellow-pine, or filipinus pine, is a very large pine tree species of variable ...

Hypotrix Alamosa
''Hypotrix alamosa'' is a moth of the family Noctuidae first described by William Barnes in 1904. It is known only from the United States in south-eastern Arizona Arizona is a U.S. state, state in the Southwestern United States, Southwestern region of the United States, sharing the Four Corners region of the western United States with Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. It also borders Nevada to the nort .... Adults are on wing from early June to mid-July and early to late September. Description This species occurs in two forms. In the darker, more-common form, the forewing is reddish brown with the maculation (spots) sharply defined by dark-red lines. The medial area is similar in color to the remainder of the forewing and the postmedial line touches, or almost touches, the reniform spot. Superficially this form is most similar to '' Hypotrix hueco'' and '' Xestia bolteri'', both of which occur with ''H. alamosa''. It differs from ''X. bolteri'' in that ''H. alamosa'' has s ...
