Howrah
Howrah (; ; alternatively spelled as Haora) is a city in the Indian States and union territories of India, state of West Bengal. Howrah is located on the western bank of the Hooghly River, opposite to its twin city of Kolkata. Administratively Howrah lies within Howrah district and is the headquarters of the Howrah Sadar subdivision; it is also part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Howrah is an important industrial and transportation hub, and is also a gateway to Kolkata (and the rest of West Bengal) via Howrah railway station and Howrah Bridge. Etymology The name came from the word ''Haor''—Bengali language, Bengali word for a fluvial swampy lake, which is sedimentologically a depression where water, mud and organic debris accumulate. Howrah Junction Railway Station
Howrah railway station (also known as Howrah Junction) is a railway station located in the city of Howrah, of Kolkata Metropolitan Area, West Bengal, India. It is the largest and busiest railway complex in India, as well as one of the busiest and largest train stations in the world. It is also the oldest surviving railway complex in India. Howrah is one of the five large intercity railway stations serving the Kolkata metropolitan area, the others being , , and Kolkata railway station. The first public train from the station was on 15 August 1854, on what is now the Howrah – Hooghly Main Line. Howrah Bridge
The Howrah Bridge is a balanced steel bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943, the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking the both sides of cities of Kolkata (Calcutta). Burrabazar is connected with Howrah rail terminal because of this bridge. On 14 June 1965, it was renamed Rabindra Setu after the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and Asian Nobel laureate. It is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge. The bridge is one of four on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. Howrah district (, ) is a district of the West Bengal state in eastern India. Howrah district is one of the highly urbanized area of West Bengal. It has thousands of years of rich heritage in the form of the great Bengali kingdom of Bhurshut. The district is named after its headquarters, the city of Howrah. Shibpur
Shibpur is a neighbourhood in Howrah of Howrah district in the Indian States and territories of India, state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). It is well known for being the location of the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, the IIEST Shibpur and the Hajar Hath Kali Temple. The famous Bengali linguist Suniti Kumar Chatterji was born in Shibpur. During British Raj, its name was written as Seebpore. Dumurjala Sports City (or Dumurjala Sports Complex) is a sports complex of 56 acres in Dumurjala, Howrah, West Bengal, India. The complex consists of the 6000-seater indoor Howrah Indoor Stadium; outdoor grounds for football, cricket and field hockey, hockey; a swimming pool; an outdoor gym; and a public park. The complex also has two helipads. The complex Dumurjala Sports City is spread over an area of nearly 60 acres connected by Dumurjala Ring Road. Santragachi is a neighbourhood in Howrah of Howrah district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Santragachi Junction in Santragachi is one of the five intercity railway junctions of Howrah-Kolkata, which serves as a railway junction-cum-terminus for the South Eastern Railway. Howrah Municipal Corporation (abbreviated as HMC) is the local government of the city of Howrah, West Bengal, India. It is the second largest municipal corporation and urban area in the state. This civic administrative body administers an area of now. History Foundation The introduction of the East India Railway in 1854 caused an influx of people in Howrah city. As a result, public nuisance and threat of epidemics arose. So, the Howrah Offence Act was founded in 1857 to ensure prevention of local nuisances. Howrah Indoor Stadium
The Howrah Indoor Stadium is a multi-purpose indoor stadium located at Dumurjala, Howrah, West Bengal, India. It is the only indoor stadium in Howrah district, designed as a venue for indoor sports, cultural events and other programs. Formation In the 1980s, the Left Front-led Government of West Bengal planned an indoor stadium of national standard in Howrah. The stadium was constructed at Dumurjala, a neighborhood of Santragachi, Shibpur and Ramrajatala, by Howrah Improvement Trust and opened in 1997. The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, previously known as Indian Botanic Garden and the Calcutta Botanic Garden, is a botanical garden situated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata. They are commonly known as the Calcutta Botanical Garden and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. The gardens exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares. It is under Botanical Survey of India (BSI) of Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
