Horaglanis
''Horaglanis'' is a genus of small airbreathing catfishes that are endemic to Kerala in India. The four known species are all adapted to life underground, lack pigmentation and are blind. This genus and '' Kryptoglanis'', both from the Western Ghats, are the only known underground-living catfish in India. Etymology The genus is named in honor of Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora (1896–1955), the Director, of the Zoological Survey of India. ''Horaglanis populi'' is a species of airbreathing catfish endemic to India, mainly in wells and underground water channels around Pathanamthitta District, Kerala. It lacks pigmentation and eyes, like other cavefish, Like other species of similar catfishes found in Kerala, it is also obtained from wells dug through laterite. ''Horaglanis populi'' has an elongated body that comes with a round cross-section anteriorly which also comes with a large head that excludes eyes. The head has a wide mouth a truncated snout and four pairs of barbels which are two mandibular pairs, one nasal pair, and one maxillary pair. Airbreathing Catfish
Airbreathing catfish comprise the family Clariidae of the order Siluriformes. Sixteen genera and about 117 species of clariid fishes are described; all are freshwater species. Other groups of catfish also breathe air, such as the Callichthyidae and Loricariidae. Distribution Although clariids occur in India, Syria, southern Turkey, and large parts of Southeast Asia, their diversity is the largest in Africa. Description Clariid catfish are characterized by an elongated body, the presence of four barbels, long dorsal and anal fins, and especially by the autapomorphic presence of a supra branchial organ, formed by tree-like structures from the second and fourth gill arches.
