Hollins, Alabama
Hollins is a census-designated place and Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community in Clay County, Alabama, Clay County, Alabama, United States. Its population was 517 as of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. History Hollins is named after an official who worked for the Kaul Lumber Company. Hollins began when the Columbus and Western Railway reached the area in the late 1800s. In 1888, John Kaul bought out the Sample Lumber Company in Hollins and founded the Kaul Lumber Company. The large demand for lumber led to an increase in lumber jobs in Hollins. In addition to the Kaul Lumber headquarters and mill, Hollins was home to a hotel, several general stores, three churches, a school, and a cotton gin. Hollins was incorporated on February 21, 1893. In 1908, the Kaul Lumber mill burned and was rebuilt. In 1911, the mill was closed and was moved to Kaulton, Alabama, Kaulton. Hollins is a census-designated place (CDP) in Botetourt and Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. Hollins covers much of the area known locally as "North County". The population was 15,574 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Roanoke metropolitan area. The area is also the home of Hollins University in addition to four properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Black Horse Tavern-Bellvue Hotel and Office, Harshbarger House, the Hollins College Quadrangle, and Old Tombstone. Geography Hollins is located at (37.339601, −79.953069). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.5 km2), all land. Harry Bowly Hollins (September 5, 1854 – February 24, 1938) was an American financier, banker, and railroad magnate. He was responsible for organizing the banking and brokerage firm bearing his name, H.B. Hollins & Co. in 1878. Life and business He was born to Francis Hollins and Elizabeth Coles Morris. Hollins, a native New Yorker educated in private schools, was married to socialite Evelina Meserole Knapp on January 25, 1877. The couple had four sons, Harry B. Jr., McKim (Kim), John K. Unsworth is a settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Bury district, in Greater Manchester, England. The population of Unsworth Ward, as of the United Kingdom Census 2021, 2021 census is 11,034. Hollins is an area of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, 1.7 miles south of the town centre. Formerly a hamlet set amongst open moorland and farmland along Hollins Road, the 19th century growth of Oldham saw Hollins form a contiguous urban area with Hollinwood, Limeside, Garden Suburb, Werneth, Coppice and Copster Hill. Amenities Hollins Fire Station opened in 1981 to replace the now demolished Werneth Fire Station. The area is served by Lyndhurst Primary School. It was formerly served by Hollins Comprehensive School. Hollins Methodist Church on Millgate has served the area since 1840.
