The term ''Universität'' (plural: ''Universitäten'') is reserved for institutions with the right to confer doctorates. In contrast, ''Hochschule'' encompasses ''Universitäten'' as well as institutions that are not authorized to confer doctorates. German ( ) is a West Germanic language mainly spoken in Central Europe.
