Hitra is a List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Trøndelag Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The municipality covers the Hitra (island), island of Hitra and hundreds of smaller islands, islets, and Skerry, skerries as well as an area on the mainland of Norway. It is part of the Fosen Districts of Norway, region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Fillan, Norway, Fillan. HNoMS ''Hitra'' is a Royal Norwegian Navy submarine chaser that saw action during World War II. She is named after the Norwegian island of Hitra. History Wartime service ''Hitra'' was originally built as a SC-497 class submarine chaser for the United States Navy. She was laid down on 22 September 1942 by the Fisher Boat Works of Detroit and launched on 31 March 1943. She was commissioned into the US Navy as USS ''SC-718'' on 25 May 1943. In August 1943 US Admiral Harold R. Stark, commander of US Naval Forces Europe, ordered ''SC-718'' and two other SC-class subchasers - ''SC-683'' and ''SC-1061'' - to be transferred to Britain. Stationed in Miami at the time, the three subchasers received top secret orders to report to Brooklyn Navy Yard where they were to await further orders. Hitra Church
Hitra Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Hitra Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located in the village of Melandsjøen on the north shore of the Hitra (island), island of Hitra. It is one of the churches for the ''Hitra og Fillan'' parish which is part of the Orkdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros. The square-shaped, stone church was built in a Churches in Norway#Floor plan, cruciform style in 1927 using plans drawn up by the architect Claus Hjelte (1884-1969). The church seats about 400 people. History The medieval Dolm Church served the parish of Hitra for nearly 800 years before it burned down on the night of 3 February 1920. Hitra Wind Farm
Hitra Wind Farm is a 24-turbine wind farm located in Hitra Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway and operated by Statkraft. The farm is located on top of the Elsfjellet plateau in the central part of the island of Hitra, just south of the village of Straum and about west of the village of Sandstad. Until the expansion of the Smøla Wind Farm in 2005, Hitra was the largest wind farm in the country and had cost . Each of the 24 wind turbines can produce of power for a maximum generated power of and an annual production of for the whole farm. The farm was opened on 14 October 2004. Hitra Tunnel
The Hitra Tunnel () is an undersea tunnel in Hitra Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The tunnel connects the island of Hitra to the mainland. The tunnel is long and reaches a depth of below sea level, making it the deepest tunnel in the world when it was built, overtaking Byfjord Tunnel. The tunnel begins on the island of Jøsnøya, just south of the village of Sandstad. The tunnel then runs under the Trondheimsleia to the island of Hemnskjela. There is a small bridge connecting Hemnskjela to the mainland. The tunnel was built as part of a large project called "Fastlandsforbindelsen Hitra–Frøya". Hitra (island)
Hitra is an island in Hitra Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The island is the 7th largest island in Norway (excluding Svalbard) and the largest island south of the Lofoten archipelago. The island lies between the Trondheimsleia strait and the Frøyfjorden, just southwest of the entrance to the Trondheimsfjorden. Hitra is surrounded by many islands such as Smøla (island), Smøla to the southwest; Bispøyan, Helgbustadøya, Dolmøya, and Frøya (island), Frøya to the north; Ulvøya (Hitra), Ulvøya, Fjellværsøya, and Leksa to the east; and Hemnskjela and the mainland of Norway to the south.
