Fort Garland
Fort Garland (1858–1883), Colorado, United States, was designed to house two companies of soldiers to protect settlers in the San Luis Valley, then in the Territory of New Mexico (1850-1912). It was named for General John Garland (1793-1861), then commander of the United States Army's Military District of New Mexico. History Colonel Kit Carson and New Mexico Volunteers were stationed here after the American Civil War (1861-1865), in 1866 and he successfully negotiated a treaty with the local native Utes in 1867. The Ninth U.S. Cavalry ( Buffalo Soldiers) was stationed here for three years between 1876 and 1879. In 1876, these troops were called to the La Plata region to prevent conflict between the Utes and white mining prospectors. Salt Works Ranch
The Salt Works Ranch, at 3858 U.S. Route 285 in Park County, Colorado near Hartsel, Colorado, was founded in 1862. The land is unusual for the presence of saline springs. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The ranch includes the Colorado Salt Works, which is separately listed on the National Register, and is crossed by U.S. Highway 285 and by the 1879 railroad grade of the Denver South Park & Pacific. Dexter Cabin
Dexter Cabin was the Leadville, Colorado home and hunting lodge of James V. Dexter, a mining investor and businessman. Although it is a cabin, the interior has been described as "surprisingly plush," "elegantly finished," and "incredibly ornate.". Healy House Museum
Healy House Museum was the Leadville, Colorado home built in 1878 by mining engineer and city father August R. Meyer for his bride, Emma. It was purchased in 1888 by Daniel Healy (1857-1912), who operated a boarding house with his cousin Nellie Healy. An immigrant from Ireland, Healy served Leadville as a mail carrier and later assistant postmaster. He subsequently started several successful businesses and represented Leadville in Colorado's state legislature from 1903 to 1905. After Daniel Healy had died in 1912, the house was given to his sister, nieces, and cousin Nellie Healy. Nellie continued to live in and operate the boarding house until 1936. She donated the house to the historical association in 1936 under the condition that the house be used to benefit the city. In 1938, Clara Gaw Norton oversaw restoration work at the house paid for through grant money from the Boettcher Foundation. Norton hoped to turn the Healy House into the city's first history museum.
