Hildesheim (district)
Hildesheim is a district (''Landkreis'') in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Hanover, Peine, Wolfenbüttel, Goslar, Northeim, Holzminden and Hameln-Pyrmont. History In 1885 the Prussian government established districts within the Province of Hanover. The present territory of the district was occupied by four districts: Hildesheim, Alfeld, Gronau and Marienburg. In 1932 the district of Gronau joined Alfeld, and the number of districts was reduced to three. When the state of Lower Saxony was founded in 1946, the districts were reorganised: Hildesheim became an urban district, the remaining district of Hildesheim and Marienburg were merged to the new district of Hildesheim-Marienburg. The district of Alfeld remained in its former borders. Hildesheim
Hildesheim (; or ; ) is a city in Lower Saxony, in north-central Germany with 101,693 inhabitants. It is in the district of Hildesheim (district), Hildesheim, about southeast of Hanover on the banks of the Innerste River, a small tributary of the Leine River. The Holy Roman Emperor Louis the Pious founded the Bishopric of Hildesheim in 815 and created the first settlement with a chapel on the so-called ''Domhügel''. Hildesheim is situated on the north–south Bundesautobahn 7, Autobahn 7, and hence is connected with Hamburg in the north and Austria in the south. Sieben Berge
The Sieben Berge ("Seven Hills") are a ridge of hills up to in the Lower Saxon Hills in the district of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. Together with the Vorberge and the Sackwald the Sieben Berge belong to the geological formation of the Sackmulde. They are famous as a result of the fairy tale, Snow White. Geography The Sieben Berge ridge is located in the east of the Leine Uplands, a northern part of the Lower Saxon Hills. It lies between Gronau on the Leine to the north, Sibbesse to the northeast and Alfeld to the south. The Sieben Berge are surrounded by the hills of the Hildesheim Forest to the northeast, the Sauberge to the east-northeast, the Vorberge to the east and the Sackwald to the southeast. To the west runs the valley of the Leine, behind which rises the Ith ridge. Topographically it transitions to the Vorberge almost seamlessly. Freden () is a village and a municipality in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Leine, approx. 25 km south of Hildesheim. Diekholzen is a village and a municipality in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 6 km southwest of Hildesheim on the Beuster, a tributary of the Innerste. History In 1974, the former villages of Diekholzen, Söhre, Barienrode and Egenstedt were united to form the municipality of Diekholzen. Each village has its own history and various sights. Algermissen
Algermissen is a village and a municipality in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 12 km north of Hildesheim, and 20 km southeast of Hanover. Bockenem (; Eastphalian: ''Bokeln'') is a town in the district of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany that was founded in 1154. It is located on the German Timber-Frame Road. Bad Salzdetfurth () is a town on the banks of the River Lamme in the district of Hildesheim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Thousand-year Rose
The Thousand-year Rose (), also known as the Rose of Hildesheim, grows on the apse of the Hildesheim Cathedral, a Catholic cathedral in Hildesheim, Germany, that is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral and the adjacent St. Michael's Church, Hildesheim, St. Michael's Church have been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1985. The rose that climbs on the wall of the cathedral's apse is believed to be the oldest living rose in the world. A wild dog rose (''Rosa canina''), it grows against the eastern apse of the cathedral, which is around high and wide. The rose bush reaches a height of around and documentation verifies its age at around 700 years. Slight variations arise in the tale of the establishment of the diocese by King Louis the Pious at Hildesheim in 815 but the rose bush is a common theme in all versions.
