Hasselt (, , ) is the capital and largest City status in Belgium, city of the Provinces of Belgium, province of Limburg (Belgium), Limburg in the Flemish Region of Belgium. As of 1 August 2023, Hasselt had a total population of 80,846. The old town of Hasselt is surrounded by a number of satellite hamlets including Kiewit, Runkst, Banneuxwijk, Godsheide and Rapertingen. Further away are several Deelgemeente#Belgium, sub-municipalities which were once within independent municipalities, including Kermt, Kuringen, Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Spalbeek, Stevoort, Stokrooie, and Wimmertingen. Geographically, Hasselt is located between the Campine region, north of the Demer river, and the Hesbaye region, to the south. Both the Demer river and the Albert Canal run through the municipality. Godsheide
Godsheide () is a village and Catholic parish within the north-eastern corner of the Belgian city of Hasselt, in the province of Limburg. Between the village and the main town of Hasselt there are several large modern developments - the Hasselt golf club, the Grenslandhallen entertainment centre, the Limburg provincial government buildings, and the Kinepolis cinema complex. Apart from the rest of Hasselt, it is bounded by Diepenbeek on the east, and Bokrijk, a part of Genk, to the north. The parish is divided in northern and southern sections by the waterways and roads which both run east–west through it. The Albert Canal separates the modern main village from a northern section, "Vosseberg", which has access to the main village via two bridges, while the southern extreme of the parish, "Wolske", lies to the south of the Demer and the nearby Universiteitslaan main road. Kiewit
Kiewit () is a Belgium, Belgian parish and village within the northernmost extension of the Flemish region, Flemish municipality of Hasselt. It also borders on the municipality of Zonhoven to the north and Genk to the east, with Kuringen, another part of Hasselt, to the west. History Until the 20th century, Kiewit was relatively uninhabited and was composed of open heathland and pastures between the older settlements at Kuringen, Hasselt, Zonhoven, and Bokrijk. Kiewit is the section of these lands which was claimed by Hasselt. Steven Vandeput
Steven Vandeput (born 30 March 1967) is a Belgium, Belgian politician and is affiliated to the New Flemish Alliance. He was elected as a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in 2010. In October 2014 he became the Minister of Defence in the Michel I Government, Michel Government. He was succeeded by Sander Loones on 12 November 2018 after Vandeput became mayor of Hasselt on 1 January 2019. Biography Early life Vandeput was born in 1967 in Hasselt. He studied history at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Catholic University of Leuven where he was active in the conservative Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond (KVHV) student group and served as the KVHV's president from 1988 to 1989. He then obtained a degree in commercial and financial sciences from the Limburg School of Economics in 1992.
