Half Marathons
A half marathon is a road running event of —half the distance of a marathon. It is common for a half marathon event to be held concurrently with a marathon or a 5K race, using almost the same course with a late start, an early finish, or shortcuts. If finisher medals are awarded, the medal or ribbon may differ from those for the full marathon. The half marathon is also known as a 21K, 21.1K, or 13.1 miles, although these values are rounded and not formally correct. The men's world record time, pending ratification, is 56:42, set by Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda in February 2025 in Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain. Hagos Gebrhiwet Berhe (, born 11 May 1994) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the bronze medal in the 5,000 m at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He won the gold medal in the 5 km at the 2023 World Road Running Championships. He has also won silver and bronze medals at the World Athletics Championships. Hagos is the second-fastest man of all time in the 5,000 metres. A successful junior, he won gold in the junior race at the 2013 World Cross Country Championships. Jemal Yimer
Jemal Yimer Mekonnen (born 11 September 1996) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He placed fourth at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, and finished fifth at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics – Men's 10,000 metres. Yimer won the 10,000 m title at the 2018 African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria, and placed third in the event at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco. He finished third at the 2021 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:10:38. Yimer is a two time winner of the Clearer Water Antrim Coast Half Marathon, with victories in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the race, with times of 1:00:30 and 59:04 respectively. Samuel Kamau Wanjiru (10 November 1986 – 15 May 2011) was a Kenyan long-distance runner who won the 2008 Beijing Olympics Marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:06:32; becoming the first Kenyan to win the Olympic gold in the marathon. He became the youngest gold medallist in the marathon since 1932. He set the current (as of 2020) 10,000m World Junior Record in 2005 and set the half marathon world record 3 times. In 2009, he won both the London Marathon and Chicago Marathon, running the fastest marathons ever recorded in the United Kingdom and United States, respectively. Rodgers Kwemoi Chumo (born 3 March 1997) is a Kenyan long-distance runner specialising in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres. Kwemoi is currently serving a six year competition ban resulting from breaches of anti-doping rules with an end date of 7 August 2029. Zersenay Tadese Habtesilase ( Tigrinya: ዘርእሰናይ ታደሰ; born 8 February 1982) is an Eritrean former long-distance track and road running athlete. He held the men's half marathon world record from 2010 to 2018. His bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2004 Athens Olympics made him the first ever Eritrean Olympic medallist, and his 20-km title at the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships also made him the country's first athlete to win at a world championship event. Daniel Mateiko (born 4 August 1998) is a Kenyan long-distance runner and member of the NN Running Team. He has raced mainly between 5000m and half marathon and holds a 58:26 half marathon personal best which makes him the 9th fastest of all time over that distance.
