Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Decatur County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,312 at the time of the 2020 census. Etymology Greensburg founder Thomas Hendricks Sr.'s wife named the city in honor of her native town, Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Its first post office opened in 1823 and spelled the city's name as Greensburgh until 1894. History Greensburg was laid out in 1822 by Col Thomas Hendricks, a veteran of the War of 1812. Michigan Road was completed in 1837, bringing more people to settle and visit the growing town. After the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and St. Louis Railroad was completed in 1853, the town boomed. Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Kiowa County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the population of the city was 740. It is home to the world's largest hand-dug well. On the evening of May 4, 2007, Greensburg was devastated by an EF5 tornado that obliterated at least 95 percent of the city, killing eleven people between the ages of 46 and 84. The community had a population of 2,000 people in the late 1990s, and 1,400 people before the tornado leveled the city. Some people did not want to come back, or rebuild the community, or build green. By 2010, over half of Greensburg's population before the tornado had moved away from the city. Today, Greensburg stands as a model "green town", often described as the greenest in America. Fetchin Bones
Fetchin Bones was a cross-genre rock band from North Carolina. During a six-year career they produced four studio albums but were most celebrated for inspired live performances. One reviewer stated they were "a band that must be seen live for a full grasp of their eclectic frenzy". During numerous tours Fetchin Bones supported acts such as R.E.M., The B-52s, X and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Allmusic described the band as "a truly underrated group that didn't hit it big when they should've". Musical style The band mixed blues, punk and country music, and Hope Nicholls' "powerhouse" vocals were compared to Janis Joplin's in their "dirty intensity". 2007 Greensburg Tornado
In the evening hours of Friday, May 4, 2007, amid a tornado outbreak across the central United States, a devastating EF5tornado moved through Kiowa County, Kansas, heavily damaging the town of Greensburg. The tornado, commonly known as the Greensburg tornado, tracked through the area, killing 12 people and injuring 63 others. The tornado was the first to be rated EF5on the Enhanced Fujita scale after the retirement of the original Fujita scale in the United States on February 1, 2007. The tornado touched down in northern Comanche County, moving to the north while continuously widening. The tornado eventually entered Kiowa County, crossing U.S. Route 183before reaching a peak width of to the south of Greensburg before entering the city. The tornado heavily damaged Greensburg; 662structures in the town sustained some form of damage before the tornado left the area.
