The Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Aintree, Merseyside, England. The 2025 Grand National (officially known as the Randox Health, Randox 2025 Grand National for sponsorship reasons) was the 177th annual running of the Grand National horse race. It took place on Saturday 5 April 2025, at Aintree Racecourse, Aintree near Liverpool, England. The winner was Nick Rockett, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by his son, amateur jockey Patrick Mullins (jockey), Patrick Mullins. The death of Celebre d'Allen two days after the race, following his collapse after the last fence and subsequent lung infection, led to widespread public concern, as well as criticism of racing and the British Horseracing Authority from animal rights groups. 2023 Grand National
The 2023 Grand National (officially known as the Randox Health, Randox 2023 Grand National for sponsorship reasons) was the 175th annual running of the Grand National horse race. It took place on Saturday 15 April 2023, at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England. The event was sponsored by Randox Health with Natasha Jonas acting as ambassador. The race was won by Corach Rambler who was trained by Lucinda Russell in Scotland and ridden by Irish jockey Derek Fox (jockey), Derek Fox, who had both previously won the Grand National in 2017 Grand National, 2017 with One For Arthur. The race start was delayed by 14 minutes, following protests by campaign group Animal Rising, the first such disruptions since the cancellation of the 1993 Grand National due to a series of false starts and the 1997 Grand National due to the IRA bomb threat. 1960 Grand National
The 1960 Grand National was the 114th renewal of the Grand National Horse racing, horse race that took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England, on 26 March 1960. The steeplechase was won by nine-year-old Merryman II, who, at odds of 13/2, became the first clear favourite to win for 33 years. His jockey, 22-year-old Gerry Scott, had been lucky to take part in the race, having broken his collarbone two weeks earlier. Merryman II became the first ever Scottish winner of the National. The top weight was officially reduced to a maximum of 12 stone from 12 stone 7 lbs, though it had been over a decade since any horse had been asked to shoulder such a burden. Animal Rising (formerly Animal Rebellion) is a British animal activist movement with the stated aim of compelling social change towards animal rights and a Plant-based diet, plant-based food system. They justify their actions with the Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, impact of animal agriculture on climate change, Holocene extinction, species extinction and Ecological collapse, ecosystem breakdown. Animal Rising use civil disobedience methods that have frequently resulted in its members being arrested. Their methods include graffiti, destruction of property, blockading and preventing food distribution, trespassing onto livestock industry premises, and blockading streets. 1997 Grand National
The 1997 Grand National (known officially as the Martell Grand National and also informally as the Monday National) was the 150th official running of the Grand National steeplechase held at Aintree near Liverpool. The race was scheduled to be run on Saturday 5 April 1997, but was postponed by two days to Monday 7 April after a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) bomb threat forced the evacuation of the course. The race was won in a time of nine minutes and 5.9 seconds and by a distance of 25 lengths by New Zealand-bred Lord Gyllene at odds of 14/1. He was ridden by jockey Tony Dobbin, trained by Steve Brookshaw at his Preston Farm base in Uffington, Shropshire, and ran in the colours of Stanley Clarke. The 1993 Grand National (officially the Martell Grand National Chase Handicap Grade 3) was scheduled on 3 April 1993 to be the 147th running of the Grand National horse race, held annually at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England. It was the first and so far only time that the steeplechase was declared void, after 30 of the 39 runners began and carried on racing despite there having been a false start. The 1927 Grand National was the 86th renewal of the Grand National horse race that took place at Aintree near Liverpool, England, on 25 March 1927. The race was won by Sprig, the 8/1 favourite ridden by jockey Ted Leader. Leader's father, Tom, trained the winner. It was Sprig's third attempt at winning the National – his owner, Mary Partridge, having kept him in training in memory of her son who died in World War I. At Becher's Brook on the first circuit, Marsin and Lissett III fell and Silver Somme – a popular fancy – refused. Randox Health is the new sponsor of the main race and the festival itself for the next five years. It was broadcast live on television by ITV for the first time. There was live radio coverage by BBC Radio, which has held the radio rights since 1927, and by Talksport, which covered the main race live for the fourth time.
