Grammatidae
Grammatidae is a small Family (biology), family of ray-finned fishes which were formerly placed in the order Perciformes or as indeterminate Percomorpha, percomorphs, but are now considered Blenniiformes, blenniiforms. They are commonly known as basslets. They are marine fish found in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. They are characterized in part by a broken or absent lateral line. The largest species reach around 10 centimeters in maximum length. Some basslets are colorful and are kept in marine aquarium, marine aquaria. There are two genera: * ''Gramma (fish), Gramma'' * ''Lipogramma'' A number of other species may be called "basslets", in particular members of Serranidae, where they may be called "fairy basslets". Lipogramma Trilineata
''Lipogramma trilineata'', the three-lined basslet, is a species of ray-finned fish from the family Grammatidae. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean from the waters off southeastern Florida south through the Bahamas into the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea as well as the coasts of Central and South America from Quintana Roo, Mexico to Nicaragua, and the seas off Cartagena and those off Venezuela at Curaçao and Bonaire. It occurs underneath rocky and coral ledges as well as occurring in deep reefs and on the outer wall at depths ranging from . Its range has been invaded by lionfish, an invasive species in the western Atlantic, which prey on a variety of fish species smaller than which means that both adults and juveniles ''L. trineata'' are likely prey of lionfish. It has been recorded that in the Bahamas, there has been a near two-thirds decline in the biomass of fish which lionfish prey on over a period of two years. Other species of basslet have been confirmed as p ...

Royal Gramma
The royal gramma (''Gramma loreto''), also known as the fairy basslet, is a species of fish in the family Grammatidae native to reef environments of the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. They are commonly kept in aquariums. Appearance The fish can be a light purple to a deep violet starting at the head which fades mid-body to a golden yellow at the tail. The royal gramma will also have a small black spot on the front of the dorsal fin and a black line that streaks through the eye. It resembles the false gramma (''Pictichromis paccagnellae''), with the two main differences between the two being the false gramma has clear fins and does not fade, but rather has a distinct change in color. The royal gramma is relatively small, averaging slightly over and has been tank bred. The largest scientifically-measured royal gramma was long. Diet The royal gramma is a planktivore, eating mostly zooplankton and crustaceans. The royal gramma is also a cleaner fish. It removes the ectoparasi ...

Percomorpha
Percomorpha () is an extremely large and diverse clade of ray-finned fish. With more than 17,000 known species (including Scombroidei, tuna, Syngnathiformes, seahorses, gobies, Cichlidae, cichlids, flatfish, Labridae, wrasse, Perciformes, perches, Lophiiformes, anglerfish, and Tetraodontiformes, pufferfish) known from both marine and freshwater ecosystems, it is the most speciose clade of extant Vertebrate, vertebrates. Evolution Percomorpha are the most biodiversity, diverse group of teleost fish today. Teleosts, and percomorphs in particular, thrived during the Cenozoic Era (geology), era. Fossil evidence shows that there was a major increase in size and abundance of teleosts immediately after the mass extinction event at the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary ago. The oldest known percomorph fossils are of the early Tetraodontiformes, tetraodontiforms ''Protriacanthus'' and Cretatriacanthidae from the Santonian to Campanian of Italy and Slov ...

Blenniiformes
Blenniiformes is an order of percomorph fish in the clade Ovalentaria, of which it is the most diverse group. This order contains several well-known fish groups such as blennies and damselfish. The term is derived from the Latin word '' blennius'', which itself comes from the Ancient Greek word βλεννός (''blennos''), meaning "mucus" or "slime." This refers to the slimy coating that is often found on the scales of blenny fish. The earliest known member of this order is the stem group-damselfish '' Chaychanus'' from the Early Paleocene of Mexico. Taxonomy As with many other percomorphs, most members of this group were originally placed in the Perciformes. Previously, ''Fishes of the World'' defined this order as restricted to the blennies and their close relatives, and placed several taxa such as the damselfishes, jawfishes, and surfperches as indeterminate members of Ovalentaria. Phylogenetic evidence suggests that these families form a successive grade leading to ...

Serranidae
Serranidae is a large family (biology), family of fishes belonging to the order Perciformes. The family contains about 450 species in 65 genera, including the sea basses and the groupers (subfamily Epinephelinae). Although many species are small, in some cases less than , the giant grouper (''Epinephelus lanceolatus'') is one of the largest bony fishes in the world, growing to in length and in weight. Representatives of this group live in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide. Characteristics Many serranid species are brightly colored, and many of the larger species are caught commercially for food. They are usually found over reefs, in tropical to subtropical waters along the coasts. Serranids are generally robust in form, with large mouths and small spines on the gill coverings. They typically have several rows of sharp teeth, usually with a pair of particularly large, canine (tooth), canine-like teeth projecting from the lower jaw. All serranids are carnivorous. Although ...

Taxa Named By David Starr Jordan
In biology, a taxon (back-formation from ''taxonomy''; : taxa) is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. Although neither is required, a taxon is usually known by a particular name and given a particular ranking, especially if and when it is accepted or becomes established. It is very common, however, for taxonomists to remain at odds over what belongs to a taxon and the criteria used for inclusion, especially in the context of rank-based (" Linnaean") nomenclature (much less so under phylogenetic nomenclature). If a taxon is given a formal scientific name, its use is then governed by one of the nomenclature codes specifying which scientific name is correct for a particular grouping. Initial attempts at classifying and ordering organisms (plants and animals) were presumably set forth in prehistoric times by hunter-gatherers, as suggested by the fairly sophisticated folk taxonomies. Much later, Aristotle, and later still ...

Fish Of The Western Atlantic
A fish (: fish or fishes) is an aquatic animal, aquatic, Anamniotes, anamniotic, gill-bearing vertebrate animal with swimming fish fin, fins and craniate, a hard skull, but lacking limb (anatomy), limbs with digit (anatomy), digits. Fish can be grouped into the more basal (phylogenetics), basal jawless fish and the more common jawed fish, the latter including all extant taxon, living cartilaginous fish, cartilaginous and bony fish, as well as the extinct placoderms and acanthodians. In a break to the long tradition of grouping all fish into a single Class (biology), class (Pisces), modern phylogenetics views fish as a paraphyletic group. Most fish are ectotherm, cold-blooded, their body temperature varying with the surrounding water, though some large nekton, active swimmers like white shark and tuna can hold a higher core temperature. Many fish can communication in aquatic animals#Acoustic, communicate acoustically with each other, such as during courtship displays. The stud ...

Gramma Melacara
The blackcap basslet (''Gramma melacara''), or blackcap gramma, is a species of fish inhabiting reefs in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. It prefers vertical surfaces with crevices in which it can hide. It can be found at depths from (usually between ). This species can also be found in the aquarium trade. Appearance A small fish, reaching a length of TL, it is purple with a diagonal black cap on its head. The body colour varies from magenta to purple, and there is a jet-black diagonal cap running from the lip to the fore dorsal fin. The largest scientifically measured blackcap gramma was 10.0 cm / 3.9 inches. In the aquarium A hardy fish, it is typically peaceful and can be kept in a reef aquarium. Care should be taken, however, to only add one fish to an aquarium, as they are territorial and do not accept other members of the same, or similar looking species in the same aquarium. Small shrimp also may get eaten by this fish. Since it likes to hide, it should only be ...
