Governors Of Rhode Island
The governor of Rhode Island is the head of government of Rhode Island and serves as commander-in-chief of the U.S. state's Rhode Island Army National Guard, Army National Guard and Rhode Island Air National Guard, Air National Guard. The current governor is Dan McKee. Governors Rhode Island was one of the original Thirteen Colonies and was admitted as a state on May 29, 1790. Before it declared its independence, Rhode Island was a Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, colony of the Kingdom of Great Britain. The state initially continued operating under the provisions of its Rhode Island Royal Charter, 1663 charter, which simply said that the governor and deputy-governor would be elected from time to time. The 1842 Constitution of Rhode Island, constitution formalized the terms for governor and lieutenant governor to be one year, beginning on the first Tuesday of May after the election. Dan McKee
Daniel J. McKee (born June 16, 1951) is an American politician and businessman serving as the 76th governor of Rhode Island since 2021. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he also served as Rhode Island's 69th Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, lieutenant governor from 2015 to 2021. Born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, Cumberland, Rhode Island, McKee received his undergraduate degree from Assumption University (Worcester), Assumption College and received his master's degree from the Harvard Kennedy School. The Constitution of the State of Rhode Island is a document describing the structure and function of the government of the U.S. State of Rhode Island. 1842 Constitution Constitutional Convention Rhode Island held a constitutional convention in 1841. Prior to 1842, Rhode Island was still governed by the 1663 Royal Charter. At nearly two centuries old, the document essentially restricted voting rights to a very small population of elite, rural, landowning native-born white males. William Greene Jr. (August 16, 1731November 29, 1809) was an American Statesman who served as the second governor of the state of Rhode Island, serving in this capacity for eight years, five of which were during the American Revolutionary War. Joseph Wanton
Joseph Wanton Sr. (15 August 1705 – 19 July 1780) was a merchant and governor in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations from 1769 to 1775. Not wanting to go to war with Britain, he has been branded as a Loyalist, but he remained neutral during the war, and he and his property were not disturbed. Born in Newport of a prominent Quaker family that was very involved in Rhode Island politics, Wanton became a highly successful merchant. He is depicted in the satirical 1750s painting by John Greenwood, '' Sea Captains Carousing in Surinam'', with other prominent merchants and seamen from the colony. As a merchant, he was involved in the trade of most goods, including slaves, and at one point his ship with a cargo of rum and slaves was confiscated off the coast of Africa by a French privateer.
