Madura, Western Australia
Madura is a small roadhouse community located on the Eyre Highway in Western Australia, on the Roe Plains. It is from Perth. It is at the foot of the escarpment next to the Madura Pass down from the Nullarbor Plain. UTC+8:45 is the local time zone in use. History Madura was settled in 1876 as a place to breed quality cavalry horses for the British Indian Army for use in the Northwest Frontier region of India (now part of Pakistan). The horses were shipped from the coast at Eucla. (Cervantes, north of Perth, was also used for breeding.) The site was chosen as it was one of the few with free flowing bore water in the area. The surrounding area is part of Madura Station, currently a sheep station, but previously used to graze cattle, horses and camels. Cocklebiddy, Western Australia
Cocklebiddy is a small roadhouse community located on the Eyre Highway in Western Australia. It is the third stop after Norseman on the journey eastwards across the Nullarbor Plain. Like other locations in the region, the site consists of little more than a roadhouse. It is the nearest locality to the coastal feature of Twilight Cove, which is to the south. Cocklebiddy follows the time zone used by Eucla of UTC+8:45. It is situated from Border Village. History 1800s and 1900s Cocklebiddy started as an Aboriginal mission station, of which only the stone foundations remain today. The area was thought to be a potential water source and, during World War II, Army engineers attempted to tap fresh water from the lakes, but it was found that a thin skin of fresh water overlay a vast volume of saline water. Eucla, Western Australia
Eucla ( ) is the easternmost locality in Western Australia, located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia along the Eyre Highway, approximately west of the South Australian border. Mount Meharry
Mount Meharry ( Panyjima:) is the highest mountain in Western Australia. It is located in the Hamersley Range within the southeastern part of Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region, approximately south-southeast of Wittenoom, and east-southeast of Tom Price. The Pandjima peoples are the traditional owners of the area. History Mount Meharry is named after William Thomas Meharry (1912–1967), Chief Geodetic Surveyor for Western Australia from 1959 to 1967. It was discovered by Europeans by Surveyor Trevor Markey and his party in 1967. Tom Meharry directed the survey party and performed the calculations that confirmed the mountain was the highest peak in Western Australia, being higher than Mount Bruce which lies northwest of Mount Meharry.
