Gambier Islands
The Gambier Islands ( or ) are an archipelago in French Polynesia, located at the southeast terminus of the Tuamotu archipelago. They cover an area of , and are made up of the Mangareva Islands, a group of high islands remnants of a caldera along with islets on the surrounding fringing reef, and the uninhabited Temoe atoll, which is located 45 km (28 mi) south-east of the Mangareva Islands. The Gambiers are generally considered a separate island group from Tuamotu both because their culture and language (Mangarevan language, Mangarevan) are much more closely related to those of the Marquesas Islands, and because, while the Tuamotus comprise several chains of coral atolls, the Mangareva Islands are of volcanic origin with central high islands. Flag Of The Gambier Islands
The Flag of the Gambier Islands is the flag of the Gambier Islands of French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean, administered by France. It was created in 1832 and adopted in 1837. Description The flag of the Gambier Islands is divided into three horizontal bands, with white on the top and bottom and blue in the middle. There is a blue five-pointed star in each of the four corners and one white five-pointed star in the center. Each of the stars represent one of the major islands in the group, with the blue stars representing Mangareva, Taravai, Aukena, and Akamaru Island, Akamaru, and the white star representing the islet Temoe, which is geographically distant from the others. The blue represents the sea while the white represents purity, and evangelism. The blue and white may also relate to the distinctive color of the local churches. Temoe
Temoe, or Te Moe, is a small atoll of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia. It is located in the far southeast of the Tuamotu group archipelago. It lies about 37 km southeast from the Gambier Islands and more than southeast from Mataiva, at the other end of the Tuamotu archipelago. Temoe Atoll is trapezoidal in shape and bound by a continuous reef with many small shallow spillways. It is in length and has a maximum width of . The lagoon has a maximum depth of . Its islands are low and flat and the lagoon has no navigable pass to enter it. Temoe is permanently uninhabited. James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier
Admiral of the Fleet James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier, (13 October 1756 – 19 April 1833) was a Royal Navy officer and colonial administrator. After seeing action at the capture of Charleston during the American Revolutionary War, he saw action again, as captain of the third-rate , at the battle of the Glorious First of June in 1794, during the French Revolutionary Wars, gaining the distinction of commanding the first ship to break through the enemy line. Gambier went on to be a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and First Naval Lord and then served as Governor of Newfoundland. Together with General Lord Cathcart, he oversaw the bombardment of Copenhagen during the Napoleonic Wars.
