Freehold (law)
A freehold, in common law jurisdictions or Commonwealth countries such as England and Wales, Australia, Canada, Ireland, India and the United States, is the common mode of ownership of real property, or land, and all immovable structures attached to such land. It is in contrast to a leasehold, in which the property reverts to the owner of the land after the lease period expires or otherwise lawfully terminates. For an estate to be a freehold, it must possess two qualities: immobility (property must be land or some interest issuing out of or annexed to land) and ownership of it must be forever ("of an indeterminate duration"). Freehold Raceway
Freehold Raceway was a half-mile () harness racetrack in Freehold, New Jersey. At the time of its closure in December 2024, it was the oldest racetrack in the United States. History Horse races have been taking place at Freehold Raceway since the 1830s. The Monmouth County Agricultural Society was formed on December 17, 1853, and in 1854 they began holding an annual fair at Freehold Raceway with harness racing. In 1984, an electrical fire destroyed the main building. Racing was then held under tents until the new building was completed in 1986. In 1990, Freehold Raceway Mall opened up across the street, and was, until 2007, decorated with harness racing motif. In 1998, Freehold was acquired by a joint venture of Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Racing, owner of Parx Casino and Racing. ''Freehold'' is a military science fiction novel by Michael Z. Williamson, published in 2004 by Baen Books. The book tells the story of Kendra Pacelli, a young soldier who begins the book in the service of a world-dominant, authoritarian United Nations. Accused of a crime she did not commit, she flees Earth for the Freehold of Grainne where she struggles to adapt to the climate and culture of an ultra-libertarian planet. She eventually joins the Freehold military and fights in a war against a UN invasion. The novel received positive reviews in ''SF Site'' and ''Kliatt'' but a negative review in ''Science Fiction Chronicle''. The ''Freehold'' series is continued in ''The Weapon'', which begins prior to ''Freehold'' and ends approximately two years afterwards. ''Farnham's Freehold'' is a science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein. A serialized version, edited by Frederik Pohl, appeared in ''Worlds of If'' magazine (July, August, and October 1964). The complete version was published in novel form by G. P. Putnam later in 1964. ''Farnham's Freehold'' is a post-apocalyptic tale. The setup for the story is a direct hit by a nuclear weapon, catapulting a nuclear shelter containing Farnham, his wife, son, daughter, daughter's friend, and employee (Joseph) into the future. While writing the story, Heinlein drew on his experience of building a fallout shelter under his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the 1960s. Freehold Raceway Mall is a super-regional shopping mall located in Freehold Township, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of 2020, it was the largest shopping mall in Central Jersey and the state's third largest shopping mall, behind Garden State Plaza in Paramus, and American Dream Meadowlands in East Rutherford.
