Free State Stars Football club was a South African professional association football, soccer club based in Bethlehem, Free State, Bethlehem, Free State (South African province), Free State that played in the National First Division. Formerly known as Makwane Computer Stars, Fairway Stars and Qwa Qwa Stars, their most significant honour was winning the 1994 Telkom Knockout, Coca-Cola Cup and 2017–18 Nedbank Cup. The club sold their National First Division status to Casric F.C. at the start of the 2022–23 National First Division, 2022–23 season. Following the sale of Bloemfontein Celtic the previous year, this left the Free State (province), Free State without any representatives in professional football. Goble Park is a multi-use stadium in Bethlehem, Free State, Bethlehem, South Africa. It is currently used mostly for football (soccer), football matches. Bunene Ngaduane (born 30 July 1972) is a Congolese former professional footballer who played as a striker for Ankaragücü in Turkey and Qwa Qwa Stars and Moroka Swallows FC in South Africa. The South African Premiership, also known as the Betway Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and commonly referred to as the PSL after its governing body, is a professional soccer league in South Africa and the highest level of the South African soccer league system. It has been organised since 1996. The 2024–25 season started on 14 September 2024, Mamelodi Sundowns successfully defended the title in 2025 which they've held continuously since the 2017–18 season. Mamelodi is a township (South Africa), township northeast of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. A part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, it was set up by the then apartheid government in 1953. Etymology"Mamelodi" is the name derived from the Sepedi word with the prefix being "ma" meaning mother, and the suffix "melodi" meaning melodies. Its meaning can be translated to mean ''Mother of Melodies''. History The township was established when 16 houses were built on the farm Vlakfontein in June 1953 and later the name changed to Mamelodi. Kennedy Mweene
Kennedy Mweene (born 11 December 1984) is a retired Zambian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. On club level he spent most of his career in South African Premier Soccer League clubs Free State Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns. For the Zambia national team, he is the most capped player, having represented Zambia more than 120 times. Club career Renowned for his penalty-saving and penalty-taking skills, Mweene was arguably one of the best goalkeepers in Africa, winning the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season award (best player in the South African top division) in the 2008–09 season. He played for Free State Stars until the end of the 2012–13 season. On 27 June 2013, he agreed to a three-year deal with Mamelodi Sundowns. Mweene retired in July 2023. The 2006–07 National First Division (known as the Mvela Golden League for sponsorship reasons) was the 11th season of the National First Division, the second tier of South African soccer. The champions were Free State Stars, who finished eighteen points ahead of their nearest rivals, and were promoted to the South African Premier Division. Points deductions PJ Stars Kings were deducted 15 points by SAFA for using unregistered players, and as a result suffered relegation to the SAFA Second Division. Nathi Lions and City Pillars were deducted 1 point and 4 points respectively for the same reason. The Nedbank Cup is the current name of South Africa's Premier Soccer League, premier club association football, soccer knockout tournament. While many formats have been used over the years, the tournament has always been based on the idea of giving lower league and amateur teams a chance to compete with clubs from the top league for the cup. The tournament is based on the English FA Cup, which has become known for "giant killings" (lower league clubs defeating a top-flight club).
