Fraser Island
K'gari ( , ), also known by its former name Fraser Island, is a World Heritage-listed sand island along the south-eastern coast in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. The island lies approximately north of the state capital, Brisbane, and is within the Fraser Coast Region local council area. The world heritage listing includes the island, its surrounding waters and parts of the nearby mainland which make up the Great Sandy National Park. In the , the island had a population of 152. Up to 500,000 people visit the island each year. The island is part of the traditional lands of the Butchulla people, under the traditional name of "K'gari". European settlers who arrived in 1847 named the island "Fraser Island" after Captain James Fraser, master of ''Stirling Castle'', who was shipwrecked and died on the island in early August 1836. Gubbi Gubbi, also spelt Kabi Kabi, is a language of Queensland in Australia, formerly spoken by the Kabi Kabi people of South-east Queensland. The main dialect, Gubbi Gubbi, is language extinction, extinct, but there are still 24 people with knowledge of the Butchulla dialect (also spelt Batjala, Batyala, Badjala, and variants), a language spoken by the Butchulla people of K'gari (Fraser Island). Hervey Bay () is a city on the coast of the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, Australia. The city is situated approximately or 3½ hours' highway drive north of the state capital, Brisbane. It is located on the bay of the same name open to the Coral Sea between the Queensland mainland and nearby K'gari (also known as Fraser Island). Stirling Castle (1829 Brig)
''Stirling Castle'' was launched in 1829. She wrecked in 1836 on Eliza Reef on passage from Sydney for Singapore and Manila. Career ''Stirling Castle'' enters ''Lloyd's Register'' in 1830 with Fraser, Master, and Abrams & Co., owners, and trade Greenock–Quebec. Before her fateful voyage, ''Stirling Castle'' had sailed from Greenock, Scotland, to the colony of Sydney in 1831 with John Dunmore Lang's "mechanics" with the intention of building the Australian College and the founding members of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts. On the trip the mechanics set up a university to teach one another the trade and skills each one had.
