Association football is the most popular sport, both in terms of participants and spectators, in Amsterdam. Introduction Amsterdam is home of the '' Eredivisie'' football club AFC Ajax. The stadium Johan Cruyff Arena is the home of Ajax. It is located in the south-east of the city next to the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA railway station. Before moving to their current location in 1996, Ajax played their regular matches in De Meer Stadion. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. List Of Dutch Football Champions
The Dutch football champions are the winners of the highest league in Dutch football, which since 1956 is the Eredivisie. The championship was first awarded in 1898. Until 1954 the national champion was determined by means of a championship competition between the champions of the different regions. This system continued for two years after the introduction of professional football in 1954 until the creation of the Eredivisie for the 1956–57 season. Hendrik Johannes Cruijff (, internationally known as Johan Cruyff; 25 April 1947 – 24 March 2016) was a Dutch professional football player and manager. As a player, he won the Ballon d'Or three times, in 1971, 1973 and 1974. Cruyff was a proponent of the football philosophy known as Total Football explored by Rinus Michels. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport and one of the most influential figures in modern football, as well as one of its best managers ever. Marinus Jacobus Hendricus Michels (; 9 February 1928 – 3 March 2005) was a Dutch football player and coach. He played his entire career for AFC Ajax, which he later managed, and played for and later managed the Netherlands national team for four spells. 1962 European Cup Final
The 1962 European Cup Final was a football match held at the Olympisch Stadion, Amsterdam, on 2 May 1962, that saw Benfica play against Real Madrid. Benfica defeated their opponents 5–3, to win the European Cup for the second successive season. Ferenc Puskás became the first player to have scored a hat-trick in multiple European Cup finals, having also becoming the only one to ever score four goals in a European Cup final in 1960, and the first to score a hat-trick in the European Cup final but ended up on the losing side. Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam)
The Olympic Stadium (Dutch: ''Olympisch Stadion'', ) is a sporting venue which was used as the main stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. The venue is currently used mostly for athletics, other sports events and concerts. When completed, the stadium had a capacity of 31,600. Following the completion of the rival De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam in 1937, the Amsterdam authorities increased the capacity of the Olympic Stadium to 64,000 by adding a second ring to the stadium. In 1987 the stadium was listed as a national monument. AFC Ajax used the Olympic Stadium for international games until 1996, when the Amsterdam Arena, since 2018 renamed Johan Cruyff Arena, was completed. Renovation started in 1996, and the stadium was refurbished into the original construction of 1928. The 1998 UEFA Champions League Final was a football match that took place at the Amsterdam Arena in Amsterdam, on 20 May 1998 to determine the winner of the 1997–98 UEFA Champions League. It pitted Real Madrid of Spain and Juventus of Italy. Juventus appeared in their third consecutive final, while Real Madrid were in their first of the Champions League era. JOS Watergraafsmeer is an association football club from the Amsterdam district Watergraafsmeer. In 2010 the club had around 500 registered members. The Saturday team plays in the Derde Klasse, while the Sunday team competes in the Eerste Klasse.
