''FlatOut'' is a series of action demolition derby/racing video games created by Finnish independent video game developer Bugbear Entertainment. The ''FlatOut'' series has sold a total of almost 3 million units worldwide. After Bugbear developed ''FlatOut: Head On'', Dutch video game developer Team6 Game Studios developed the next three games in the series, which are the Windows-exclusive ''FlatOut 3'' and two spin-offs on Wii and Android. Kylotonn developed the series' fourth installment, '' FlatOut 4: Total Insanity'', which was released on March 17, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Europe and May 2 in the United States. In 2024, Flat2VR Studios announced a remake of FlatOut (2004) for Meta Quest, PSVR2, and SteamVR. ''FlatOut'' is a 2004 racing video game developed by Finnish developer Bugbear Entertainment and published by Empire Interactive for Windows, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Gameplay in ''FlatOut'' places emphasis on demolition derby-style races and features a sophisticated physics engine. Sixteen different cars are included, each with five different skins. The game is mostly known for car drivers flying through the windshield. An update for the PC version was released in July 2024, that implemented Steam Workshop support, improved support for the Steam Deck and added various quality-of-life improvements. Gameplay Modes in ''FlatOut'' include standard races, in either open environments or race tracks, and demolition derby deathmatches, in which the last vehicle standing is declared the winner; both modes pit players against seven computer-controlled opponents. Team6 Game Studios B.V. is a privately owned Dutch video game developer based in Assen, Netherlands. Founded in 2001 under a different name, the creative team developed several games. However, in 2003, the founders decided to change the name to Team6 Game Studios B.V. The company currently employs over 35 workers and is headed by Director Ronnie Nelis. As of 2021, Team6 has developed over 80 games, some of which feature motorsport licenses such as the National Hot Rod Association and Monster Jam. The studio has been criticized for its generally poor quality of games, such as FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction, which is the 5th worst rated game on Steam, Road Rage, which Metacritic lists as the second-worst game of 2017, and Taxi Chaos, which Metacritic lists as the fourth-worst game of 2021. Bugbear Entertainment Oy is a Finnish video game developer based in Helsinki, founded by Janne Alanenpää in 2000. The company is best known for the '' FlatOut'' series and '' Wreckfest''. In November 2018, a majority stake of the company was acquired by THQ Nordic. History Bugbear Entertainment was founded in Helsinki in 2000 by Janne Alanenpää. On 14 November 2018, THQ Nordic announced that they had acquired 90% of Bugbear for an undisclosed sum, leaving open the option to acquire the remaining 10% later on. Strategy First Inc. is a Canadian video game publisher based in Montreal. Founded in 1988 by Don McFatridge, Steve Wall and Dave Hill, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and was subsequently acquired by Silverstar Holdings in 2005.
