Filene Research Institute
The Filene Research Institute is an American credit union and consumer finance think tank headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. History and objective Founded in 1989, the institute is named for Edward Filene, a Boston, Massachusetts-based businessman and philanthropist who was instrumental in the creation of credit unions in the U.S. In 1993, the institute published a research report on the evolution of credit union field of membership, helping to lay the groundwork for H.R 1151, the Credit Union Membership Access Act. In 2003, the institute started the REAL Solutions project to study financial services for low-income households and address predatory lending and other fringe financial services. The project became a program of the National Credit Union Foundation in 2007. Filene's
Filene's was an American department store chain founded in 1881 by William Filene. The historic Filene's Department Store in the Downtown Crossing district of Boston, Massachusetts housed the flagship store and headquarters, while branch stores operated throughout New England and New York. Filene's was a founding member of the Federated Department Stores holding company in 1929. It was acquired by The May Department Stores Company in 1988, and expanded with the mergers of G. Fox & Co. in 1992 and Steiger's in 1994. Filene's and Kaufmann's were merged into a single division in 2002, although they maintained their individual brands. May was acquired by Federated in 2005, which dissolved Filene's and converted stores to Macy's in 2006. Filene's Basement
Filene's Basement, also called The Basement, was a Massachusetts-based chain of department stores which was owned by Retail Ventures, Inc. until April 2009 when it was sold to Syms. Founded in 1909 and one of the oldest off-price retailers in the United States, Filene's Basement focused on high-end goods and was known for its distinctive, low-technology automatic markdown system. As of late 2006, the company operated stores in metropolitan areas in eight U.S. states and Washington, D.C. and used a distribution center in Auburn, Massachusetts. The store's name was derived from the subterranean location of its flagship store, in the basement of the former Filene's department store at Downtown Crossing in Boston, Massachusetts. Filene's Department Store is a former department store building in the Downtown Crossing shopping district in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was designed by Daniel Burnham for Abraham Lincoln Filene and Edward Filene, and opened in 1912. It was the flagship store of the Filene's department store chain, was acquired by Federated Department Stores in 2005, and closed in favor of the adjacent, Federated-owned Macy's store in 2006. The building has since been incorporated into the base of the Millennium Tower residential skyscraper, and the original space has been renovated into offices for Arnold Worldwide and Havas, and retail space for Primark and Roche Bros. Abraham Lincoln Filene
Abraham Lincoln Filene (April 5, 1865 – August 27, 1957) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Biography Born to a Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts, he was one of 5 children of William Filene and Clara Ballin. His parents were German Jewish immigrants - his father from Posen, Prussia and mother was born in Segnitz, Bavaria - who immigrated to the United States in 1848. His father founded Filene's department stores. Known by his middle name, Lincoln, together with his older brother Edward, built his father's store into a highly successful business. A social reformer, Lincoln Filene supported the American women's suffrage movement and went against the position taken by most members of the American business community when he publicly supported President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal agenda. Catherine Filene Shouse
Catherine Filene Shouse (June 9, 1896 – December 14, 1994) was an American researcher and philanthropist. She graduated in 1918 from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She worked for the Women's Division of the U.S. Employment Service of the Department of Labor, and was the first woman appointed to the Democratic National Committee in 1925. She was also the editor of the ''Woman's National Democratic Committee's Bulletin'' (1929–32), and the first woman to chair the Federal Prison for Women Board. Shouse was a strong supporter of the arts and served as chair of the President's Music Committee's Person-to-Person Program (1957–1963). In 1966 she donated her personal property, Wolf Trap Farm, to the National Park Service.
