FC Daugava
FC Daugava was a Latvian football club, based at the Daugava Stadium, in the city of Daugavpils. It was founded as FC Ditton in 2001. They lastly played in the Latvian Second League in 2015. They were one of two simultaneous clubs with the name ''Daugava'' and should not be confused with the historic FK Daugava Rīga. In 2008, they won the Latvian Cup. In 2012, they won their first ever Latvian Higher League championship. History In 2001, the team was founded with the support of Daugavpils' businessman Vladislavs Drīksne, who was the owner of the eponymous ''Ditton'' company. After first entering the city league, in a few years Ditton managed to grow and ultimately win promotion to the Virslīga in 2003, although was instantly relegated in 2004. Daugavpils
Daugavpils (see also other names) is a state city in southeastern Latvia, located on the banks of the Daugava River, from which the city derives its name. The parts of the city to the north of the river belong to the historical Latvian region of Latgale, and those to the south lie in Selonia. It is the second-largest city in the country after the capital Riga, which is located some northwest and is the ninth most populous city in the Baltic states. Daugavpils is located relatively close to Belarus and Lithuania (distances of and , respectively), and some from the Latvian border with Russia. Mihails Zemļinskis
Mihails Zemļinskis (born 21 December 1969) is a Latvian politician and former professional footballer. He played as a centre-back or sweeper, making over 100 appearances for the Latvia national team. Football career Zemļinskis spent most of his career at Skonto FC except for short periods at BVSC Budapest and at Hapoel Kfar Saba. He was a skilled central defender and played for the Latvia national team after the country regained its independence in 1991. He played 105 matches and scored 12 goals for the national team, and took part in the 2004 European Championships in Portugal. Zemļinskis wore the number 4 jersey. He eventually became a football coach at FC Daugava. He is also a former head coach of the Latvia U21 team. Latvian Supercup
The Latvian Supercup () is a one-match annual football competition. The two participating clubs are holders of the Latvian Higher League champions title and the Latvian Football Cup. The fixture is played before the start of the season. The first at so far only Supercup game was held in 2013, when Daugava defeated Skonto at Celtnieks Stadium in Daugavpils. SInce 2014, the competition has been suspended. In June 2020, the Latvian Football Federation said it plans to revive the competition, naming it after the late coach Jānis Skredelis, either in the summer of 2020 or 2021. 2012 Latvian Higher League
The 2012 Latvian Higher League was the 21st season of top-tier association football, football in Latvia. It began on 24 March 2012 and ended on 10 November 2012. FK Ventspils are the defending champions. The league comprised ten teams, one more than in the previous season. Teams The league returned to a ten-team circuit after having been forced to play the 2011 Latvian Higher League, 2011 season with only nine teams, following the withdrawal of SK Blāzma a few weeks before the season commenced. As a consequence of the Blāzma withdrawal, no team was directly relegated. 2011 Latvian First League champions FS METTA/Latvijas Universitāte from Riga were directly promoted. Latvian Higher League or Virslīga, also known as TonyBet Virslīga for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in Latvia and the highest level of the Latvian football league system. Organised by the Latvian Football Federation, the league is contested by ten clubs. Soviet Top League
The Soviet Top League, known after 1970 as the Higher League (), served as the top division (tier) of Soviet Union football from 1936 until 1991. The league's name was a conditional designation used for brevity since being completely owned and governed by the All-Union Committee of Physical Culture (an institution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Soviet Union). The winner of the competition was awarded the All-Union Committee banner. Created in 1936 the tier was originally known as "Gruppa A" and was one of four tiers that were part of the Soviet football championship. FK Daugava Rīga was a Latvian football club, based at the Daugava Stadium in Riga. They played in the Latvian Higher League. The last manager of the team was Armands Zeiberliņš. Idrottsföreningen Elfsborg, more commonly known as IF Elfsborg or simply Elfsborg (), is a professional association football, football club based in Borås, Sweden, and is affiliated to the Västergötlands Fotbollförbund.
