Evolution Championship Series
The Evolution Championship Series, commonly known as Evo, is an American annual esports event that focuses exclusively on fighting games. The tournaments are completely Open (sport), open and use the Double-elimination tournament, double elimination format. As with Super Battle Opera, contestants travel from all over the world to participate, most notably from Japan. The first Evolution was originally held as a ''Super Street Fighter II Turbo'' and ''Street Fighter Alpha 2'' tournament called the Battle by the Bay. It changed its name to Evo in 2002. Every successive tournament has seen an increase of attendees. It has been held at various venues across the Las Vegas Valley since 2005. As of 2021, the event is jointly owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment and the Endeavor (company), Endeavor esports venture RTS. Battle By The Bay
B3: Battle by the Bay, the B4 Championships, and the B5 Championships were the first three instances of the open (sport), open fighting game event that is now known as the annual Evolution Championship Series. B3 was created by Tom and Tony Cannon, Joey Cuellar, and Seth Killian, and was held in an arcade hall in Sunnyvale, California in 1996. B4 and B5 were held in Folsom, California in 2000 and 2001 respectively, before the tournament was renamed Evolution in 2002. The three tournaments were entirely focused on the ''Street Fighter'' and Marvel vs. Capcom, Capcom ''Versus'' video game franchises. The 2009 Evolution Championship Series (commonly referred to as Evo 2009 or EVO 2009) was a fighting game event held in Rio Las Vegas on July 17–19. The event featured major tournaments for various fighting games, including '' Super Street Fighter IV'' and '' Marvel vs. Capcom 2''. The release of ''Super Street Fighter IV'' drew many new players to the tournament scene, and Evo 2009 is remembered as one of the biggest years of Evolution's growth. ''Destructoid'' is a website that was founded as a video game-focused blog in March 2006 by Yanier Gonzalez, a Cuban-American cartoonist and author. Enthusiast Gaming acquired the website in 2017 and sold it to Gamurs Group in 2022. History ''Destructoid'' was owned by Yanier "Niero" Gonzalez so that he could attend the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2006. Folsom is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States.
