European Short Course Swimming Championships
The European Short Course Swimming Championships, variously referred to informally as the "Short Course Europeans" or "European 25m Championships", are a swimming meet, organized by LEN. The meet features swimmers from Europe, competing in events in a short course (25-meter) pool. The meet has traditionally been held in the beginning of December. Annual until 2013, the event now occurs in odd years. History The championships were first held in 1996, and were preceded by the "European Sprint Swimming Championships" which were held from 1991 to 1994. The ''Sprint'' meet featured 14 events: the 50 metres of the strokes, the 100 metres individual medley, and 4 × 50 metres relays (freestyle and medley). In 1996, the meet expanded to 38 events, adding the 100 metres and 200 metres of each stroke, the 400 metres, the men's 1500 metres freestyle and women's 800 metres freestyle events, and the 200 and 400 metres individual medley events; and the name was changed from "Sprint" to "Sho ... Short Course (swimming)
In competitive swimming, the term short course (abbreviated SC) is used to identify a swimming pool that is in length. The term is also often included in meet names when conducted in a short course pool. "Short course" is the second type of pool configuration currently recognized by World Aquatics and other swimming bodies for pool competition; the other/primary pool length being "long course", where the pool is 50 meters in length. Swimming events at the Olympics and at the World Aquatics Championships are conducted in a long-course pool. The " World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m)", colloquially the "short-course worlds", are held in alternate years from the long-course worlds. Short-course competitions may be held in a longer pool into which a temporary barrier has been placed 25 metres from one end as a turning point. The European Short Course Swimming Championships 2006 were held in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 December. The venue of the event was the aquatic center of Mäkelänrinteen uintikeskus, which last hosted a major event at the pre-Olympic 2000 European Aquatics Championships.
