Regions Of Guyana
Guyana is divided into 10 regions: Each Region is administered by a Regional Democratic Council (RDC) which is headed by a Chairman. The Regions are divided into neighbourhood councils, known as Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs). The current regional structure was established by the Local Democratic Organs Act in 1980. Essequibo River
The Essequibo River (; originally called by Alonso de Ojeda; ) is the largest river in Guyana, and the largest river between the Orinoco and Amazon River, Amazon. Rising in the Acarai Mountains near the Brazil–Guyana border, the Essequibo flows to the north for through forest and savanna into the Atlantic Ocean. It has a total drainage basin of and an average discharge of . Territory near the river is argued over by Venezuela and Guyana. Essequibo (colony)
Essequibo ( ; ) was a Dutch colony in the Guianas and later a county on the Essequibo River in the Guiana region on the north coast of South America. It was a colony of the Dutch West India Company between 1616 and 1792 and a colony of the Dutch state from 1792 until 1815. It was merged with Demerara in 1812 by the British who took control. It formally became a British colony in 1815 until Demerara-Essequibo was merged with Berbice to form the colony of British Guiana in 1831. In 1838, it became a county of British Guiana till 1958. In 1966, British Guiana gained independence as Guyana and in 1970 it became a republic as the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. It was located around the lower course of the Essequibo River. Essequibo Islands-West Demerara
Essequibo Islands-West Demerara (Region 3) is a Regions of Guyana, region of Guyana. It is situated around the Essequibo River, the largest river in Guyana that lies between the Orinoco and Amazon River, Amazon rivers of South America. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of Demerara-Mahaica and Demerara River to the east, the region of Upper Demerara-Berbice to the south and the region of Pomeroon-Supenaam to the west. In this region are the villages of Parika, Tuschen and Uitvlugt. Along the Essequibo River are 365 islands, of which three of the largest are to be found at the mouth of the Essequibo: Hogg Island, Guyana, Hogg Island, Wakenaam and Leguan.
