Energy In Western Australia
Western Australia, like other Australian states and high-income countries, is a heavy energy user by global standards. The most distinctive features of Western Australia's energy systems are the massive export of natural gas, its independence from the interconnected cross-state gas and electricity networks in eastern Australia, and the presence of two separate large-scale grids and many microgrids to provide power for the sparsely populated state. Natural Gas Western Australia is the source of over 60% of Australia's natural gas, and over 80% of this production is exported as liquified natural gas. The vast majority of production is from offshore wells off the north-western coast of the state. Domestic gas is piped to industry in the Pilbara and the major population centres in the south-west. There is, however, no pipeline connecting Western Australia's gas network to the eastern states of Australia. Western Australia has a domestic gas reservation policy that requires ...

Liquified Petroleum Gas
Liquefied petroleum gas, also referred to as liquid petroleum gas (LPG or LP gas), is a fuel gas which contains a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, specifically propane, ''n''-butane and isobutane. It can also contain some propylene, butylene, and isobutylene/ isobutene. LPG is used as a fuel gas in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles, and is used as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons in an effort to reduce the damage it causes to the ozone layer. When specifically used as a vehicle fuel, it is often referred to as autogas or just as gas. Varieties of LPG that are bought and sold include mixes that are mostly propane (), mostly butane (), and, most commonly, mixes including both propane and butane. In the northern hemisphere winter, the mixes contain more propane, while in summer, they contain more butane. In the United States, mainly two grades of LPG are sold: commercial propane and HD-5. These specificat ...

Microgrid
A microgrid is a local electrical grid with defined electrical boundaries, acting as a single and controllable entity. It is able to operate in grid-connected and off-grid modes.''What are Microgrids and Why are They Becoming so Popular?''
Enchanted Rock, March 2023
A stand-alone or isolated microgrid only operates off-the-grid and cannot be connected to a wider electric power system. Very small microgrids are called nanogrids. A grid-connected microgrid normally operates connected to and synchronous with the traditional wide area synchronous grid (macrogrid), but is able to disconnect from the interconnected grid and to function autonomously in "Islanding, island mode" as technical or econo ...

Hydroelectricity
Hydroelectricity, or hydroelectric power, is Electricity generation, electricity generated from hydropower (water power). Hydropower supplies 15% of the world's electricity, almost 4,210 TWh in 2023, which is more than all other Renewable energy, renewable sources combined and also more than nuclear power. Hydropower can provide large amounts of Low-carbon power, low-carbon electricity on demand, making it a key element for creating secure and clean electricity supply systems. A hydroelectric power station that has a dam and reservoir is a flexible source, since the amount of electricity produced can be increased or decreased in seconds or minutes in response to varying electricity demand. Once a hydroelectric complex is constructed, it produces no direct waste, and almost always emits considerably less greenhouse gas than fossil fuel-powered energy plants.

South West Interconnected System
The South West Interconnected System (SWIS) is an electricity grid in the southwestern part of Western Australia. It extends to the coast in the south and west, to Kalbarri in the north and Kalgoorlie in the east. It is not connected to the other large Australian grids. Other parts of the state are connected to independent, smaller grids, including the larger-scale North West Interconnected System and many smaller microgrids managed by Horizon Power. The SWIS consists of both the South West Interconnected Network ("poles and wires") and its electricity generators. The South West Interconnected Network is operated by Western Power, owned by the Western Australian government, and includes over 7800 km of transmission lines, and over 93,000 km of distribution lines. Some of the generators are owned by the government through Synergy and others are privately owned. Wholesale trade in electricity across the SWIS is managed by the Australian Energy Market Operator through the Wholesal ...
