Eastern Oregon University
Eastern Oregon University (EOU) (officially designated as Oregon’s Rural University) is a public university in La Grande, Oregon. It was formerly part of the since dissolved Oregon University System. EOU was founded in 1929 as a teacher’s college. The university offers bachelor's and master's degrees. The school's athletic teams, the Mountaineers, are members of the Cascade and Frontier conferences of the NAIA. History EOU opened its doors in 1929 as Eastern Oregon Normal School, a teacher training school. The first building on campus was Inlow Hall, later incorporating the former Ackerman Elementary School in 1936. The school built dormitories for female students in 1938 (Dorian Hall) followed residences for men in 1947 (Hunt Hall). In 1939, the Oregon Legislature changed the name to Eastern Oregon College of Education, and the words "of Education" were dropped from the college's name in 1956. Quinn Coliseum
Quinn Coliseum is the basketball, wrestling, and volleyball arena for Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon. Located at the center of campus on G Avenue between 7th and 8th streets, it serves as the home for Eastern Oregon Mountaineers indoor teams. It was constructed in 1958 with a "wing" architecture theme, and seats 1,403. Quinn Coliseum is named for coach Bob Quinn, who coached a variety of sports at the school between 1929 and 1967. Quinn Coliseum hosted amateur boxing matches in the 1980s. In 1986, a drowning occurred in the deep end of the pool facilities. John Norton, 45 of Baker, was discovered at the bottom of the pool by a lifeguard and was unresponsive to revive him. In 2007, Quinn Coliseum was renovated, which included a new bleachers, energy efficient lighting, and new indoor softball batting cages. Oregon University System
The Oregon University System (OUS) was administered by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education (the "Board") and the Chancellor of the OUS, who was appointed by the Board. It was disbanded in June 2015. OUS was responsible for governing the state's seven public universities. Legislation passed in 2013 allowed Oregon public universities the option to set up their own institutional governing boards and the state's three largest universities (Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Portland State University) opted for institutional boards that became effective July 1, 2014.
