Downing, Missouri
Downing is a city in Schuyler County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 300. It is part of the Kirksville micropolitan area, Missouri, Kirksville Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Although not being laid out as a town until 1872, the Downing area was one of the earliest settled areas of Schuyler County, with Henry Downing building a home and claiming land a few miles south of the area circa 1837. It was also near present-day Downing that the first school in the county was established. In the spring of 1841, a crude log cabin was built for this purpose near Henry Downing's home and Miss Esther Hathaway was employed as a teacher. Downing Professor Of The Laws Of England
The Downing Professorship of the Laws of England is one of the senior professorships in law at the University of Cambridge. The chair was founded in 1800 in pursuance of the will of Sir George Downing, the founder of Downing College, Cambridge. The professorship was originally attached solely to Downing College (although the Professor undertook University activities). In the early 20th Century, for financial reasons, this professorship, together with the Downing Professor of Medicine, was severed from the College. The original electors of the chair were the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of York, and the masters of the colleges of Clare, St John's and Downing. In 1788 Edward Christian, brother of Fletcher Christian, was appointed to the post prior to its official creation 12 years later. The Downing Baronetcy, of East Hatley in the County of Cambridge, was a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 1 July 1663 for the Anglo-Irish soldier, statesman and diplomat Sir George Downing, after whom Downing Street in London is named. Downing College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge and currently has around 950 students. Founded in 1800, it was the only college to be added to the university between 1596 and 1869, and is often described as the oldest of the new colleges and the newest of the old. Downing station, also known as the Depot Museum, is a historic train station located at Downing, Schuyler County, Missouri. It was built in 1872 by the Keokuk & Western Railroad. Downing Vaux (November 14, 1856 – May 15, 1926) was an American landscape architect. He was one of the eleven founding members of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 1899. Early life and education Born to architect Calvert Vaux (1824–1895), and Mary Swan McEntee (1830–1892), Vaux was named after his father's mentor, Andrew Jackson Downing. He had one brother, Calvert Bowyer, and three sisters: Helen, Julia, and Marian. Vaux's uncle was the painter Jervis McEntee. Vaux was an early associate of two other founding members of the ASLA: he attended boarding school in Plymouth, Massachusetts, with John Charles Olmsted, and worked with Samuel Parsons at Calvert's firm in the 1880s. Albert Downing Gray (born 1938) is an American amateur golfer. Gray played college golf at Florida State University, where he once won seven straight tournaments. He played in the Masters Tournament seven times, twice finishing as low amateur. He had a long relationship with the United States Walker Cup team, appearing three times as a player (1963, 1965, and 1967) and twice as a captain (1995 and 1997).
