Dougherty County, Georgia
Dougherty County is located in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 85,790. The county seat and sole incorporated city is Albany. Dougherty County is included in the Albany, GA metropolitan statistical area. Historically dominated by cotton plantation agriculture in the nineteenth century, it is part of the Black Belt of the South. History The county was created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 15, 1853, from a part of Baker County. It was named after Charles Dougherty, a respected judge and lawyer from Athens, Georgia. In 1854 and 1856 small areas were added from Worth County. As noted above, the county was developed by European Americans using enslaved African Americans as workers for the production of cotton as a commodity crop. Charles Dougherty (Georgia Politician)
Charles Dougherty (1801 – November 26, 1853) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician. Early life and education Born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia to Charles and Rebecca Carlton Puryear Dougherty, the younger Dougherty studied law and began its practice in Athens, Georgia. He became a leader in the Whig Party (United States), Whig party as well as a judge in the Western Circuit of the state. He married Elizabeth T. Moore on December 7, 1823, in Clarke County, Georgia. Career In 1839, Dougherty ran as the Whig candidate for Governor of Georgia but lost by 2,000 votes to the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic candidate Charles James McDonald, Charles McDonald. Dougherty died in Athens in 1853 and was buried in the Old Athens Cemetery. (He and his wife are believed to have been re-interred in Oconee Hill Cemetery, also in Athens. State Route 234 (SR 234) is a east–west state highway located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels through portions of Calhoun and Dougherty counties. Route description SR 234 begins at an intersection with SR 45 northeast of Morgan in Calhoun County. The route runs east, passing Calhoun County Road 45 (Lizard Lope Road, which leads to Conley Cemetery), Calhoun CR 136 (Wildemeade Road), and Calhoun CR 119, before it reaches an intersection with SR 55, northeast of Leary. State Route 91 (SR 91) is an south-to-north state highway in the southwest part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway travels from its southern terminus at the Florida state line, southwest of Donalsonville, where the roadway continues as Florida State Road 2 (SR 2), northeast through Albany to its northern terminus, an intersection with SR 32 at a point northeast of the city. It also travels through Donalsonville, Colquitt, and Newton. Route description SR 91 begins at the Florida state line, where the roadway continues as State Road 2.
