Donetsk ( , ; ; ), formerly known as Aleksandrovka, Yuzivka (or Hughesovka), Stalin, and Stalino, is an industrial city in eastern Ukraine located on the Kalmius River in Donetsk Oblast, which is currently occupied by Russia as the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic. The population was estimated at in the city core, with over 2 million in the metropolitan area (2011). According to the 2001 census, Donetsk was the fifth-largest city in Ukraine. Administratively, Donetsk has been the centre of Donetsk Oblast, while historically, it is the unofficial capital and largest city of the larger economic and cultural Donets Basin (''Donbas'') region. Donetsk is adjacent to another major city, Makiivka, and along with other surrounding cities forms a major urban sprawl and conurbation in the region. Donetsk Oblast, also referred to as Donechchyna (, ), is an Oblasts of Ukraine, oblast in eastern Ukraine. It is Ukraine's most populous province, with around 4.1 million residents. The Donetsk National Academic Ukrainian Musical and Drama Theatre or Donetsk State Academic Musical and Drama Theatre "Mark Brovun" () is a theatre in Donetsk, Ukraine. It was founded in 1927 and was awarded national status in November 2009. It has hosted the regional theater festival "Theatrical Donbas" since 1992 and the "Golden Key" open festival performances and concerts for children and youth since 1997. Donbass Palace
Donbass Palace, or Donbas Palace, is the first 5-star hotel in Donetsk, Ukraine that joined the leading hotels of the World (2005-2014). It is located along Artema St, 80, Donetsk in Donetsk Oblast. History Hotel "Donbass" was built in 1938 upon the plans of N. Rechanikov and A. Shuvalova. During the construction, the project was redesigned by N. Porkhunov. Panteley Tamurov supervised construction. During the Nazi occupation of Donetsk, the Gestapo was headquartered in the hotel; the building was partially destroyed during the war. From 1947 to 1949, the building was renovated, but the dome was not restored due to a lack of funds. In 1971, the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture conducted restoration works. The hotel was considered an architectural monument of the Donetsk region. Transfiguration Cathedral, Donetsk
The Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Cathedral () or the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral, is a 20th-century Eastern Orthodoxy cathedral in Donetsk, Ukraine. Konstantin Thon designed the church and the cathedral has since become one of the city's historical landmarks. Design Originally, the cathedral was constructed in accordance with architect Konstantin Thon's conventional design, which had a single dome and a cubic shape and had been authorised by the Holy Synod back in 1830. A bell tower, four domes, two side chapels, two chambers for altars to the north and south of the main altar, and a refectory were added to the single-domed structure a few years later, owing to further donations. The bell tower rose to become Yuzivka's (present day Donetsk) highest structure. The icons in carved kiots in the cathedral, which was subsequently adorned in a Byzantine Empire, Byzantine style by icon painters under the direction of Gennady Zhukov.
