Donaustadt
Donaustadt (; "Danube City") is the 22nd district of Vienna, Austria (). Donaustadt is the easternmost district of Vienna.Statistik Austria, 2007, webpagestatistik.at-23450. Geography The Donaustadt district is situated in the northeast part of Vienna and is the largest of the districts by area, occupying about one-quarter of the Vienna city area, . It borders the 2nd District ( Leopoldstadt), the 11th District ( Simmering), and the 21st District ( Floridsdorf), as well as parts of Lower Austria. The district has a large part to the west of the Danube, Danube Island and Old Danube. In the east and north, Donaustadt shares the Marchfeld. Overall, about 59 percent of the district's territory is in green areas, making 30 percent of Vienna's green space lie in the 22nd District. Breitenlee
Breitenlee is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt, the Districts of Vienna, 22nd district of Vienna. It has a population of 16,586 and covers 10.07 km2. History Breitenlee has likely existed as a village in the western Marchfeld since the 12th century. In 1529, the village was destroyed during the Siege of Vienna (1529), Ottoman Siege of Vienna, remaining abandoned for over a century. The village was rebuilt in the 1690s, and the parish church, dedicated to Saint Anne, St. Anne, was completed in 1699. In the following years, the village was repeatedly attacked by the Kuruc, Hungarian anti-House of Habsburg, Habsburg insurgents, and the Plague (disease), plague ravaged the area in 1713. During the Battle of Aspern-Essling against Napoleon in 1809, the Austrian Grenadier Reserve stood near Breitenlee and helped secure the victory under Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen, Archduke Charles. Aspern
Aspern () is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt, the Districts of Vienna, 22nd district of Vienna. It has a population of 52,375 as of 2023 and covers an area of 19.89 km2. History The area is known for the Battle of Aspern-Essling, which was fought in the nearby Lobau on 21 and 22 May 1809 during the Fifth Coalition, War of the Fifth Coalition. In the battle, the Austrian Empire, Austrian army, led by Archduke Charles of Austria, Archduke Charles, repelled an advance by Napoleon; it was the closest the French emperor had come to being defeated since his rise to power. In 1858, a large stone lion sculpture was installed in front of St. Martin's Church to commemorate the battle and the Austrian soldiers who died defending Austria against Napoleon. Kagran
Kagran is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna. It has a population of 69,744 and covers 11.02 km². History In 1904/05, Kagran, then an independent municipality, was incorporated into Vienna as part of the newly established 21st district, Floridsdorf. During the period of Red Vienna, many municipal buildings (''Gemeindebauten'') and urban settlements were constructed. Since 1954, Kagran, along with seven other towns, has been part of the 22nd district, Donaustadt. Kagran remained town-like until the 1970s, when large housing estates were built by the city to the north-east of the town centre. Geography Kagran borders five other subdivisions of Donaustadt: Süßenbrunn, Breitenlee, Hirschstetten, Stadlau, and, across the Old Danube, Kaisermühlen. Hirschstetten
Hirschstetten is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt, the Districts of Vienna, 22nd district of Vienna. It has a population of 20,622 and covers 5.52 km2. History The town was founded in 1158 as a linear settlement. Hirschstetten was often flooded due to its proximity to the then-unregulated Danube. In 1809, during the Battle of Aspern-Essling in the War of the Fifth Coalition against Napoleon, the town was partly destroyed. Hirschstetten grew in size in the 1870s after the Vienna Danube regulation, Danube regulation and the creation of the ''Marchegger Ostbahn'' railway line. In 1904, Hirschstetten was merged into Floridsdorf, the 21st district of Vienna. In 1938, the neighbourhood became part of the 22nd district of Groß-Enzersdorf, part of the new Greater Vienna.
