Diogenidae
The Diogenidae are a family of hermit crabs, sometimes known as "left-handed hermit crabs" because in contrast to most other hermit crabs, its left chela (claw) is enlarged instead of the right. It comprises 429 extant species, and a further 46 extinct species, making it the second-largest family of marine hermit crabs, after the Paguridae. Hermit Crab
Hermit crabs are anomuran Decapoda, decapod crustaceans of the superfamily (taxonomy), superfamily Paguroidea that have adapted to occupy empty scavenged mollusc shells to protect their fragile exoskeletons. There are over 800 species of hermit crab, most of which possess an asymmetric abdomen concealed by a snug-fitting shell. Hermit crabs' soft (non-Marine biogenic calcification, calcified) abdominal exoskeleton means they must occupy shelter produced by other organisms or risk being defenseless. The strong association between hermit crabs and their shelters has significantly influenced their biology. Almost 800 species carry mobile shelters (most often calcified Gastropod shell, snail shells); this protective mobility contributes to the diversity and multitude of these crustaceans which are found in almost all marine environments. In most species, development involves metamorphosis from symmetric, free-swimming larvae to morphologically asymmetric, benthic zone, benthic-dwellin ...

Dardanus Megistos
''Dardanus megistos'', the white-spotted hermit crab or spotted hermit crab, is a species of hermit crab belonging to the family Diogenidae. Etymology The genus name '' Dardanus'' refers to the son of Zeus and Electra in Greek mythology, while the species name ''megistos'' is the superlative of the Greek word ''mega'', therefore it means ''the largest''. Distribution This species is present in the Indo-Pacific region from East Africa to the South China Sea, Australia and east to Hawaii. Habitat These tropical reef-associated crabs occur in coral reef, lagoons, rocky platforms, sand and seagrass beds, from littoral and subtidal zones to deep waters, at depths up to 50 m. Description ''Dardanus megistos'' can reach a body length of about . These large crabs have a bright red body with small white eyespots surrounded by black. Their bodies are covered with long erect coarse hairs of a dark red color. They have a pair of long white primary antennae or antennules, a pair of secon ...

Diogenes (crustacean){{!}}Diogenes
Diogenes the Cynic, also known as Diogenes of Sinope (c. 413/403–c. 324/321 BC), was an ancient Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynicism. Renowned for his ascetic lifestyle, biting wit, and radical critiques of social conventions, he became a legendary figure whose life and teachings have been recounted, often through anecdote, in both antiquity and later cultural traditions. Born to a prosperous family in Sinope, his life took a dramatic turn following a scandal involving the defacement of coinage, an event that led to his exile and ultimately his radical rejection of conventional values. Embracing a life of poverty and self-sufficiency, he became famous for his unconventional behaviours that openly challenged societal norms, such as living in a jar or wandering public spaces with a lit lantern in daylight, claiming to be looking for a man. Diogenes advocated for a return to nature, the renunciation of materialism, and introduced early ideas of cosmopolitanism b ...

Clibanarius Erythropus
''Clibanarius erythropus'' is a species of hermit crab that lives in rockpools and sublittoral waters. It is found in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Azores to Brittany, the Channel Islands and as far north as the south Cornwall coast. Individuals may grow up to a carapace length of . Ecology A variety of different gastropod shells are used by ''C. erythropus'', the most frequent being '' Littorina striata'', ''Mitra'', '' Nassarius incrassatus'' and '' Stramonita haemastoma'', which collectively account for 85% of all the individuals studied in the Azores; in the Mediterranean, shells of '' Cerithium'', '' Alvania montagui'' and '' Pisania maculosa'' are most used by ''C. erythropus''. Like other hermit crabs, ''C. erythropus'' feeds on "organic debris, decayed and fresh macro-algae with associated fauna and epiphytic algal flora, small invertebrates, and macroscopic pieces of dead and live animal tissues". It has been shown ...

Ciliopagurus Strigatus
The Halloween hermit crab (''Ciliopagurus strigatus''), also known as the striped hermit crab or orange-legged hermit crab, is a brightly colored species of aquatic hermit crab in the family Diogenidae. Besides its ability to routinely clean algae in aquaria, the Halloween hermit crab's festive striped coloration also appeals to enthusiasts; it is considered the most brightly colored hermit crab in normal aquarium use. Characteristics The Halloween hermit crab is commonly found along coral substrates in the ocean, along sandy areas surrounding reefs, but not typically on top of the reefs, in shallow (less than ) tropical, coastal waters. It is native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea and Hawaii. It is very similar in appearance to three other species in the same genus: '' C. tricolor'', '' C. vakovako'', and '' C. galzini'', only distinguishable by the color of its striae. The Halloween hermit crab typically grows to in length, which is fairly large in compari ...

Calcinus Elegans
''Calcinus elegans'', also known as the blue line hermit crab, is a small, tropical hermit crab. Description It features the typical body plan of a member of the phylum Arthropoda: a segmented head, a thorax, and an abdomen. As a member of order Decapoda, this organism has 5 pairs of legs, with one pair having developed into sharper claws, or Chela (organ), chela. This hermit crab supports the heavy shell of a Gastropoda, gastropod with its four pairs of ambulatory legs, shielding its soft abdomen inside. It features a unique and exotic color pattern, sporting alternating bright blue and black stripes on its legs and olive green chela with white speckles on the ends. Two bright blue eyes peer out of the shell alongside two orange Antenna (biology), antennae and two orange antennules. The organism also has maxillae to help guide particles of food into its mouth. Some morphological differences arise based upon the geologic habitat the organism resides in. For instance, some individu ...

Diogenes Pugilator
''Diogenes pugilator'' is a species of hermit crab, sometimes called the small hermit crab or south-claw hermit crab. It is found from the coast of Angola to as far north as the North Sea, and eastwards through the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Red Sea. Populations of ''D. pugilator'' may be kept in check by the predatory crab '' Liocarcinus depurator''. This crab was first described in 1829 by Jean Louis Florent Polydore Roux as ''Pagurus pugilator''. Description Like other hermit crabs, ''D. pugilator'' conceals its soft abdomen inside an empty gastropod mollusc shell; the abdomen is twisted to fit the contours of the shell. The carapace protects the anterior part of the crab and can be up to long; it is squarish in shape, has triangular projections along the front edge, and is clad with hairs on the front two corners. The eyes are on stalks which are about half as long as the width of the carapace. The left chela (claw) is very much larger than the right one, and both cl ...

Cancellus (crustacean){{!}}Cancellus
Cancelli are lattice-work, placed before a window, a door-way, the tribunal of a judge, the chancel of a church, or any other similar place. This led to the occupation of cancellarius, which originally signified a porter who stood at the latticed or grated door of the emperor's palace. According to the ''Historia Augusta'', the emperor Carinus (reigned 283–285) gave great dissatisfaction by promoting one of these cancellarii to city prefect, although the veracity of this account is disputed. Other cancellarii were legal scribes or secretaries who sat within the lattice-work which protected the tribunals of the judges from the crowd. The chief scribe in Constantinople was eventually invested with judicial power, and from this office came the modern "chancellor".
