Diepholz (district)
Diepholz () is a district in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the northeast and clockwise) the districts of Verden, Nienburg, Minden-Lübbecke (in North Rhine-Westphalia), Osnabrück, Vechta and Oldenburg, and by the cities of Delmenhorst and Bremen. The most populous municipality is Stuhr at the border to Bremen. History From the 12th century to 1585 Diepholz was a sovereign Noble Lordship, later County, within the Holy Roman Empire that was ruled over by the Noble Lords, later Counts, of Diepholz. At the beginning of the 16th century there was great pressure from the powerful duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, which tried to annex the smaller states. By forming an alliance with the neighbouring County of Hoya and asking for help from the emperor himself the state of Diepholz managed to survive some more decades. Weyhe
Weyhe is a municipality in the district of Diepholz, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 15 km south of Bremen. History First mentioned in 860, when a sick girl from "Wege" travelled to the grave of Saint Willehad in Bremen. Legend has it that she was cured by a miracle. However, it was not until 1 March 1974 when the municipally was officially christened as "Weyhe". That day, the nine smaller municipalities Kirchweyhe, Leeste, Lahausen, Sudweyhe, Erichshof, Melchiorshausen, Dreye, Jeebel and Ahausen were united. Education In the western part there is the KGS Leeste, in the eastern part the KGS Kirchweyhe. Twistringen
Twistringen is a town in the district of Diepholz, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 30 km northeast of Diepholz, and 30 km southwest of Bremen. The source of the Delme river is located in the city. The most important attraction in Twistringen is the museum of straw processing. History Twistringen was first mentioned in a document in 1250 as "Thuisteringe". In this writing all towns, which had to pay early contributions for the maintenance of the bridge over the Weser in Bremen. There was a parish in the city since approximately 825. Dümmer
The Dümmer () or officially Dümmer See is a large lake in southern Lower Saxony (Germany). It has a surface of 13.5 km2 and an average depth of one metre. Its elevation is 37 metres. Dümmer is a popular resort for water sports, but also an important biotope for water birds and located in a zone especially frequented by migratory birds. A large section of its shore is protected by nature reserve areas. Location The Dümmer is located in the Dümmer depression. One and a half miles to the west, the Damme Hills begin to rise, eventually reaching a height of 145 m. Around the lake are fens (''Niedermoore'') and raised bogs (''Hochmoore''). The lake lies in the Dümmer Nature Park, which is just under 500 km2 in area, and in which the Damme Hills and Stemweder Berg form the central elements of the landscape.
