Diana Region
Diana is a region in Madagascar at the northern part of the island. It borders the regions of Sava to the southeast and Sofia to the southwest. It covers an area of 19,266 km2, and had a population of 889,736 in 2018. The regional capital is Antsiranana (previously known as ''Diego Suarez''). Antsiranana
Antsiranana ( ), named Diego-Suarez prior to 1975, is a city in the far north of Madagascar. Antsiranana is the capital of Diana Region. It had an estimated population of 115,015 in 2013. History At the beginning of the 16th century, a Portuguese squadron of 13 ships crisscrossed the Indian Ocean; One of these ships went adrift, and its captain, Diogo Dias, was therefore the first European to discover the island on August 10, 1500, which he named Isle of Saint Lawrence. In February 1506, Admiral Fernão Soares recognized the place and so Antomabokala, former capital of Ankarana, acquired its name of Diego Suarez (Diogo Soares, in Portuguese), which comes from the junction of the first name of the captain and the surname of the Admiral. Montagne Des Français
The Montagne des Français Reserve ( French for: ''mountain of the French'') is a protected area consisting principally of dry deciduous forest in northern Madagascar. It is part of the larger Ramena protected area complex which also includes Orangea Reserve and the Ambodivahibe Marine Reserve. These three protected areas are currently being created and will be designated in 2008. Flora and fauna The Montagne des Français reserve protects deciduous dry forest characteristic of the north of Madagascar. Much of the forest is on a calcareous massif that has been eroded into karst formations known locally as Antsingy. The forested area ranges from 100–450 metres above sea level. Nosy Tanikely National Park
The Nosy Tanikely National Park in a national park on the island of Nosy Tanikely and covers an area of 341 ha. It is located 8.5 km south of Nosy Be and west of Nosy Komba. Area and Classification Nosy Tanikely National Park is a small island covering an area of , which explains its name: "Nosy Tanikely" means "island of the small land" in French. Sometimes, it is also referred to as "Tanihely," which carries the same meaning as Tanikely but differs due to a spelling variation. Ankarana Reserve
Ankarana Special Reserve is a protected area in northern Madagascar created in 1956. It is a small, partially vegetated plateau composed of 150-million-year-old middle Jurassic limestone. With an average annual rainfall of about , the underlying rocks have been eroded to produce caves and feed subterranean rivers—a karst topography. The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion and exploitation. The southern entrance of what is now designated the Ankarana National Park is in Mahamasina (commune of Tanambao Marivorahona) on the Route nationale 6 some 108 km south-west of Antsiranana and north-east of Ambilobe. Analamerana Reserve
Analamerana Special Reserve (or Analamera) is a wildlife reserve in the north of Madagascar. The reserve was created in 1956 to protect its endemic plants and animals, such as the critically endangered Perrier's sifaka (''Propithecus perrieri''), which is considered to be one of the most endangered primates in the world. Geography Analamera is in the Diana Region, of northern Madagascar and the range in altitude is between sea level on the east coast, up to , within the highlands of Ankarana. Amber Mountain National Park
Montagne d'Ambre National Park is a national park in the Diana Region of northern Madagascar. The park is known for its endemic flora and fauna, water falls and crater lakes. It is north of the capital, Antananarivo, and is one of the most biologically diverse places in all of Madagascar with seventy-five species of birds, twenty-five species of mammals, and fifty-nine species of reptiles known to inhabit the park. Geography The park covers an area of on an isolated volcanic massif, of mostly basaltic rock, above the surrounding dry region. Attractions include spectacular waterfalls and several crater lakes.
