Deshamanya (; ; Pride of the Nation) is the second-highest national honour of Sri Lanka awarded by the Government of Sri Lanka as a civil honour. Sepala Attygalle
General (Sri Lanka), General Deshamanya Don Sepala Attygalle, (14 October 1921 – 15 January 2001) was a Sri Lankan army officer, civil servant and diplomat. The longest serving Commander of the Army (Sri Lanka), Commander of the Sri Lankan Army (1967–1977), he went on to serve as the Permanent secretary to the Ministry of Defence (Sri Lanka), Ministry of Defence and Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He is most notable for successfully crushing the 1971 JVP Insurrection (Sri Lanka), 1971 Insurrection in a matter of months and becoming the first Sri Lankan army officer to be promoted to the rank of full general. Shiva Pasupati
Deshamanya Shivakumaran Pasupati (26 August 1928 – 17 January 2025) was a Sri Lankan Tamil lawyer, President's Counsel, Solicitor General and Attorney General. Early life and family Pasupati was the son of physician V. T. Pasupati and Kamalambikai. He was educated at the Ananda College and Jaffna Hindu College. After school he joined the University of Ceylon from where he graduated with a degree in law. He then obtained Post-Graduate Diploma in International Law from the University of Cambridge. Career Pasupati was Director of Public Prosecutions. He was Solicitor General between 1974 and 1975. He then served as Attorney General from 1975 to 1988. Pasupati was a President's Counsel. Pasupati was awarded the Deshamanya title, the second highest Sri Lankan national honour, in 1989. Badi-ud-din Mahmud
Deshamanya Al-Haj Badi-ud-din Mahmud (23 June 1904 – 16 June 1997) was a Sri Lankan politician. He served ten years as Minister of Education and two years as the Minister of Health and Housing. Early life Badi-ud-din Mahmud was born in Matara, a town in the south of Sri Lanka. He was born into one of the most distinguished Sri Lankan Moor families of that time as the youngest of twelve siblings. His father was S.L.M. The Commander of the Army () is the title of the professional head of the Sri Lanka Army. The current Commander of the Army is Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo. The post's precursor was known as Commander of the Ceylon Defence Force. Serving army commanders have by convention been of the rank of Lieutenant General, promoted to the rank of General on the day of their retirement or after getting the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff which post is now obsolete. Sepala Attygalle was the first army commander who was promoted to full general on the day of his retirement in 1977. Hector Wilfred Jayewardene
Deshamanya Hector Wilfred "Harry" Jayewardene, QC (November 3, 1916 - April 20, 1990) was a prominent Sri Lankan lawyer. In 1979 he was chairman of a UNESCO conference on human rights in Bangkok and later chairman of the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. He was member at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Early life and education Born to Justice Eugene Wilfred Jayewardene, KC and Agnes Helen Don Philip Wijewardena, he was the younger brother of J. R. Jayewardene, former president of Sri Lanka. Deshamanya Neville T. D. Kanakaratna (1923 - 19 September 1999) was a Sri Lankan lawyer, diplomat and scholar who was the Governor of the Southern Province. He was the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States and High Commissioner to India. Educated at Southlands College Galle and at the Royal College, Colombo, where he was the Head Prefect in 1941, Kanakaratna pursued his higher studies at the University of Ceylon, graduating with a B.A. in history. Deshamanya Miliani Edward Claude Sansoni (18 November 1904 – 1979) was a Ceylonese judge, who served as the 32nd Chief Justice of Ceylon. Early life and education Born on 18 November 1904 to Claude Aldons Sansoni, JP, a Proctor and Hilda Gratiaen, daughter of Edward Stork Gratiaen, Colonial Surgeon, Ceylon Medical Department and Sophia Jane Vander Smagt. He had a brother Hildon Claude Sansoni and a sister Sylvia Carmen, who married Clinton Bryan Fernando. His brother Hildon Claude Sansoni was a proctor and a lieutenant in the Ceylon Royal Navy Reserve, who served as an extra aide-de-camp to the governor general of Ceylon. Hildon married the artist Barbara Sansoni, who founded the Barefoot textile design company. She gave birth to two sons; Dominic and Simon. Victor Tennekoon
Victor Tennekoon QC (9 September 1914 – April 1990) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and jurist. He served as the 35th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, as well as the 33rd Attorney General and 23rd Solicitor General. From 1979 to 1984 Tennekoon served as Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya. Deshabandhu (; ) is the third highest national honour awarded in Sri Lanka. It is awarded "for meritorious service". The title is held by no more than 150 living holders at any time. Sri Lankabhimanya (; ; The Pride of Sri Lanka) is the highest National Honours of Sri Lanka, national honour of Sri Lanka, which is awarded by the President of Sri Lanka on behalf of the government, equivalent to the National Heroes of Sri Lanka, National Hero of Sri Lanka. It is the country's highest Civil decoration, civil honour and is conferred upon "those who have rendered exceptionally outstanding and most distinguished service to the nation". The honour can only be held by five living Sri Lankans at any given time, and may also be conferred posthumously. Karu Jayasuriya is the only living recipient of the award as of .
