The Department for Transport (DfT) is a Departments of the Government of the United Kingdom, ministerial department of the Government of the United Kingdom. It is responsible for the English transport network and a limited number of transport matters in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland that have not been Devolution#United Kingdom, devolved. London and Continental Railways (LCR) is a property development company owned by the Government of the United Kingdom for developing former railway land. High Speed 2 (HS2) is a high-speed railway which has been under construction in England since 2019. The line's planned route is between Handsacre – in southern Staffordshire – and London, with a Spur line, branch to Birmingham. HS2 is to be Britain's second purpose-built High-speed rail in the United Kingdom, high-speed railway (after High Speed 1, the London to Channel Tunnel link). Great British Railways
Great British Railways (GBR) is a planned state-owned railway company that will operate most rail infrastructure in Great Britain, most passenger rail services in England, and some cross-border passenger rail services in Scotland and Wales. It will be established with the passing of the forthcoming Railways Bill, as part of the Starmer government's plans to re-nationalise the railways. East West Rail
East West Rail (or the East West Main Line, EWML) is a strategic aim to establish a new main line railway between East Anglia and Oxfordshire. The immediate plan is to build (or rebuild) a line linking Oxford and Cambridge via Bicester, Milton Keynes (at Bletchley) and Bedford, largely using the trackbed of the former Varsity Line. Thus it provides a potential route between any or all of the Great Western, Cotswold, Chiltern, West Coast, Midland, East Coast, West Anglia and Great Eastern main lines, avoiding London. DfT Operator Limited (DFTO), formerly known as DfT OLR Holdings Limited, is a British government-owned holding company established in 2018 by the Department for Transport (DfT). It was created to act as the operator of last resort for rail franchises in England, taking over train operating companies (TOCs) that are either financially failing or being returned to public ownership at the end of their contract terms.
