Delta Works
The Delta Works () is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta from the sea. Constructed between 1954 and 1997, the works consist of dams, sluices, Lock (water transport), locks, Levee, dykes, levees, and floodgate, storm surge barriers located in the provinces of the Netherlands, provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised. Along with the Zuiderzee Works, the Delta Works have been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Colijnsplaat - Zeelandbrücke
Colijnsplaat is a village in the Province of Zeeland, the Netherlands It is a part of the Municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about northeast of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1489 as "het gors Colinsplate", and means "sand bank belonging to Colijn". The sand bank was diked in the late 16th century. Colijnsplaats developed after the Oud Noord-Bevelandpolder was created in 1598. The village contains a ring road around the church. The Dutch Reformed church is a simple aisleless church. The tower was probably built in 1607. It is plastered white and is located on the edge of the church. The church was rebuilt in 1769. In 1856, a consistory was added to church. The former court house was built between 1768 and 1769. From the 19th century until 1941, it was used as town hall. Colijnsplaats was home to 1,749 people in 1840. Maassluis
Maassluis () is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality had a population of in and covered of which was water. It received town rights in 1811. History Maassluis was founded circa 1340 as a settlement next to a lock (water transport), lock (in Dutch: ''sluis'') in the sea barrier between the North Sea and Rotterdam. Originally ''Maeslandsluys'', it was part of Maasland, Maesland. In 1489 the settlement was sacked. Nieuwe Waterweg
The Nieuwe Waterweg ("New Waterway") is a ship canal in the Netherlands from Scheur, het Scheur (a branch of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta) west of the town of Maassluis to the North Sea at Hook of Holland: the #Maasmon, Maasmond, where the Nieuwe Waterweg connects to the Eurogeul#Maasgeul, Maasgeul. Europoortkering
The Europoortkering or barrier of the Europoort is a program of engineering works in addition to the Delta Plan, designed to protect the maritime access routes from the port of Rotterdam and thus, the entire South Holland against storms and tides. The original Delta Plan provided no closure of the Western Scheldt and of the Nieuwe Waterweg to allow access to the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam. But regarding the Nieuwe Waterweg and the Hartelkanaal it appeared in the mid-1980s that the levees were not high enough to ensure optimum protection of the territories densely populated South Holland. A heightening of all dikes would be too expensive. An alternative was found.
