Deewee Albums
Deewee, stylized as DEEWEE is a record label founded in 2015 by David and Stephen Dewaele of the band Soulwax. The label operates from a building in Ghent (Belgium) that the Dewaele brothers nickname ''DEEWEE 001'', referring to it as the first item on the label's catalog. The building was designed for the Dewaeles by Belgian architect Glenn Sestig. It houses the recording studio where all releases on the label are written, recorded or mixed. The Dewaele brothers conceived their label in reaction to the trend of electronic music artists collaborating remotely via file transfer and rarely meeting to work together in the same location. The label initially released music by new young artists, until 2017 when Soulwax started releasing their own music on it as well. EMS Synthi 100
The EMS Synthi 100 was a large analogue/digital hybrid synthesizer made by Electronic Music Studios, London, originally as a custom order from Radio Belgrade for what was to be the Radio Belgrade Electronic Studio, largely thanks to contact between composer Paul Pignon, then living in Belgrade, and Peter Zinovieff. The synthesiser was designed by David Cockerell and documented in detail in 1971. The cost at that time was £6,500 (about £92,500 in 2020 Pounds). The last unit built by EMS was number 30. Afterwards, one final unit was built by Datanomics, who bought assets from EMS when the company folded in 1979. The redesigned unit was sold to Gabinete de Música Electroacústica, Cuenca, Spain. ''Letter to Yu'' is the solo debut album by Belgian musician Boris Zeebroek under the name Bolis Pupul. It was released on 8 March 2024, by Soulwax's record label Deewee. Pupul produced the album with Soulwax's Stephen and David Dewaele, recording at their studio in Ghent. The album was inspired by Pupul's mother who died in 2008, and by subsequent travels to her native Hong Kong. It centers on a letter Pupul wrote to his late mother. The album mixes electronic dance music, East Asian music, and synthpop, and also includes field recordings from Hong Kong. It was received positively by critics. Background The album was inspired by Pupul's Hong Kong-born Chinese mother, Yu Wei Wun, who died in a car accident in 2008. Pupul took a trip to Hong Kong in 2018, and per a statement, "On the first day I arrived in the city I visited the street where she was born and wrote her a letter. Released on 4 March 2022 under the label Deewee, ''Topical Dancer'' is Adigéry and Pupul's debut album as a duo. Background Pupul and Adigéry are both based in Belgium with shared heritage from Martinique, a French island. They first met while working for the soundtrack of ''Belgica'', a 2016 Belgian drama, after being invited by Soulwax, who also co-wrote and co-produced the album. The album is influenced by experiences of racial discrimination and sexual abuse. In the album, Adigéry sings in English, Dutch, Creole, and French. ''Die Verboten'' is a Belgian krautrock-influenced band formed by David and Stephen Dewaele of Soulwax. The project, which also includes English-born electro artist Riton and his brother-in-law the artist and designer Fergadelic was announced in late 2006 in Belgian weekly magazine HUMO. James Nicholas Righton (born 25 August 1983) is an English musician. As well as singing, he was the keyboard-player of the London-based new rave band Klaxons, which disbanded in 2015. In March 2016, Righton announced his new project Shock Machine with a video directed by Saam Farahmand. Joe Goddard (born 12 September 1979) is a British musician, songwriter, and DJ. He is best known as a member of the English synth-pop band Hot Chip, which he co-founded with Alexis Taylor.
