The Deepings
The Deepings () are a series of settlements close to the River Welland near the borders of southern Lincolnshire and north western Cambridgeshire in eastern England. Peterborough is about 8 miles to the south, Spalding about 10 miles to the north east and Stamford about 8 miles to the west. The area is very low-lying, and gave The Deepings their name (a Saxon name translatable as either 'deep places' or 'deep lands'). The villages are mentioned in the Domesday Book. Deeping Fen lies to the North, and the drainage of it was an important part of seventeenth and eighteenth century land reclamation. It is now the responsibility of the Welland and Deepings Internal Drainage Board. Market Deeping
Market Deeping is a market town and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, on the north bank of the River Welland and the A15 road. The population of the town at the 2011 census was 6,008. History The town's market has been held since at least 1220. The town developed around the commercial use of the River Welland, which today is backed onto by many pleasant Georgian stone buildings. The town is part of a group of Lincolnshire villages and hamlets, collectively called the Deepings, which include Deeping Gate, West Deeping, Deeping St James and Langtoft. The Grade II listed limestone Packhorse Bridge was built in 1651, just after the English Civil War. The bridge was narrow, allowing for single file traffic only. Refuge ledges were built into either side of the bridge for pedestrian safety. A marker on the side of the bridge indicates the level of the water during the floods of 1880. Deeping St James
Deeping St James is a large village in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish (including Frognall) was reported as 7,051 at the 2011 census. History Based around a now lost 12th-century Benedictine Priory, destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Grade I listed Anglican church of St James is the largest church in The Deepings. It is a mixture of Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, with a tower and spire added in 1717. The stones from the priory were used to build various 17th-century buildings in the area. The village also has an 18th-century village lock-up, constructed on the site and with the materials from a 15th-century wayside cross. In the 17th century the manor was associated with the Wymondsold family of Welbeck Place, Putney, Surrey and East Lockinge, Berks. Deeping St Nicholas is a village in Lincolnshire, England, on the A1175 road between The Deepings and Spalding. Unlike Market Deeping, which is in South Kesteven district, Deeping St Nicholas is in South Holland. Deeping St Nicholas is also a South Holland civil parish which includes the small settlements of Tongue End and Hop Pole, and a number of outlying farms. Its population at the 2011 census was 1,961. Deeping Gate is a village and civil parish, lying on the River Welland in Cambridgeshire. Traditionally, the area was part of the Soke of Peterborough, geographically considered a part of Northamptonshire; it now falls within the City of Peterborough unitary authority area of Cambridgeshire. With a very small population, void of any major services, including a post office or even a chapel, the community depends on nearby Market Deeping, north of the river in Lincolnshire, for economic and market services. West Deeping is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 255. It is situated on the A1175 road, east from Stamford and west from Market Deeping. It is the smallest of The Deepings group of villages situated around the A1175 road. Village population is 277. The name 'Deeping' comes from the Old English ''deoping'' meaning 'deep place'. The Roman road of King Street passes through the village and crosses the A1175. The church of St Andrew dates back to the 13th century, with further additions in 1676 and 1803 and a restoration in 1876–77, and is Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular in style. Warwick Deeping
George Warwick Deeping (28 May 1877 – 20 April 1950) was an English novelist and short story writer, whose best-known novel was '' Sorrell and Son'' (1925). Life Born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, into a family of physicians, Warwick Deeping was educated at Merchant Taylors' School. He proceeded to Trinity College, Cambridge, to study medicine and science (receiving his MA in March 1902), then went to Middlesex Hospital to finish his medical training. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Deeping later gave up his job as a physician to become a full-time writer. He married Phyllis Maude Merrill and lived for the rest of his life in "Eastlands" on Brooklands Road, Weybridge, Surrey. He was one of the best-selling authors of the 1920s and 1930s, with seven of his novels making the best-seller list. Deeping was a prolific writer of short stories, which appeared in such British magazines as ''Cassell's'', ''The Story-Teller'', and ''The Strand' ...
