Dan Savage
Daniel Keenan Savage (born October 7, 1964) is an American author, media pundit, journalist, and LGBTQ community activist. He writes Savage Love, an internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column. In 2010, Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, began the It Gets Better Project to help prevent suicide among LGBTQ youth. He has also worked as a theater director, sometimes credited as Keenan Hollahan. Born in Chicago to Roman Catholicism, Roman Catholic parents, Savage attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting. After living in West Berlin from 1988 to 1990, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he befriended Tim Keck, co-founder of ''The Onion''. It Gets Better Project
It Gets Better is an Internet-based 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to uplift, empower, and connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) youth around the globe. It was founded in the United States by gay activist, author, media pundit, and journalist Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller on September 21, 2010, in response to the List of LGBT-related suicides, suicides of teenagers who were bullied because they were gay or because their peers suspected that they were gay. Inforum, headquartered in downtown Detroit and in Grand Rapids, was founded as the Women's Economic Club (WEC) in July 1962. History The WEC was created when Marie Moon, Alice Snider, Thelma Murrell and Dorothy Seifert gathered a group of 23 women together to discuss the formation of a luncheon club. The WEC officially received its charter from the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (NFBPWC) in 1962. It became an independent organization with its own by-laws in 1965. California Proposition 8
Proposition 8, known informally as Prop 8, was a California ballot proposition and a state constitutional amendment intended to ban same-sex marriage. It passed in the November 2008 California state elections and was later overturned by the courts. The proposition was created by opponents of same-sex marriage in advance of the California Supreme Court's May 2008 appeal ruling, '' In re Marriage Cases,'' which found the ban in 2000 on same-sex marriage ( Proposition 22) unconstitutional. The campaign for the neologism "santorum" started with a contest held in May 2003 by Dan Savage, a sex columnist and LGBTQ rights activist. In response to then-US senator Rick Santorum's views on homosexuality and comments about same sex marriage, Savage asked his readers to create a definition for the word "santorum". In his comments, Santorum had stated that " every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That's not to pick on homosexuality. Suicide Among LGBTQ People
Research has found that attempted suicide rates and suicidal ideation among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people are significantly higher than among the general population. In the United States, one study has shown the passage of laws that are said to be discriminatory against LGBTQ people may have significant negative impacts on the physical and mental health of LGBTQ youth.
