Cyprus (European Parliament Constituency)
Cyprus is a European Parliament constituency for elections in the European Union covering the member state of Cyprus. It is currently represented by six Members of the European Parliament. Members of the European Parliament Elections 2004 The 2004 European election was the sixth election to the European Parliament. However, as Cyprus had only joined the European Union earlier that month, it was the first election European election held in that state. The election took place on 13 June 2004. The number of registered voters was 483,311 – out of which 503 were Turkish Cypriots and 2054 EU nationals – while the total number of people who voted was 350.387 or 72.50% of the registered voters. The number of polling stations was 1077, allocated to each polling district in the following manner: Nicosia 416, Limassol 323, Famagusta (free area) 50, Larnaca 169 and Paphos 119. Antigoni Papadopoulou (Greek language, Greek: Αντιγόνη Παπαδοπούλου; ''née'' Pericleous (Greek: Περικλέους); born July 8, 1954) is a Greek Cypriot politician and chemist. 2019 European Parliament Election In Cyprus
An election was held on 26 May 2019 to elect six representatives from Cyprus to the European Parliament. The Democratic Rally, Democratic Rally (DISY) has won every election to the European Parliament since Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004. According to final results, DISY again won the election with 29% and 2 seats. There were no changes in seat allocation, with Progressive Party of Working People, AKEL also at 2 seats after securing 27% of the vote. Democratic Party (Cyprus), DIKO and Movement for Social Democracy, EDEK had 1 seat each, with 14% and 11% of the vote, respectively. In terms of percentage, this was Movement for Social Democracy, EDEK's best European elections result since 2004 (although that year it did not win any seats). Some attributed this in part to tactical voting, with many fearing the far-right ELAM (Cyprus), ELAM gaining a seat had it finished fourth. Neoklis Sylikiotis (; born 24 January 1959) is a Cypriot politician. From July 2014 to July 2019, he was a Member of the European Parliament and Vice-Chair of GUE/NGL. Sylikiotis was the Cypriot Minister of the Interior between September 2006 and July 2007, and again, between March 2008 and March 2012. Between March 2012 and February 2013, he was Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism. Sylikiotis is a member of leftist party AKEL. Lefteris Christoforou (Greek: Λευτέρης Χριστοφόρου; born 31 August 1963) is a Greek Cypriot politician. He was a member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2014 to 2022, where he was head of national delegation in the European People's Party. He is a member of the Democratic Rally (DISY) and he served as vice president from 2003 to 2013 and also as deputy chairman from 2013 to 2019. The EDEK Socialist Party (, EDEK) is a Greek Cypriot nationalist, social-democratic political party in Cyprus. Overview The party was founded by Vassos Lyssarides in 1969 as the United Democratic Centre Union, EDEK (, ΕΔΕΚ). It was originally a strongly anti-imperialist democratic socialist party with roots in the struggle against British colonial rule, influenced by the philosophies of the Andreas Papandreou left-wing faction within Georgios Papandreou's Centre Union, PASOK, and the 1968 movement. EDEK, and Lyssarides personally, enjoyed very good relations with Third World socialist leaders and governments, including Hafez al-Assad of Syria, Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt.
