Cycling At The 2002 Commonwealth Games – Women's Points Race
The women's points race at the 2002 Commonwealth Games was part of the Cycling at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, cycling programme, which took place on 30 July 2002. This track cycling event consists of a single race. During the race, cyclists can score points in two ways; the cyclist with the most points at the end of the race wins. The first way to score points is to lap the group. Each time a cyclist gained a full lap on the peloton, she scored 10 points. The other method of scoring points was to place in the intermediate sprints. The first four cyclists in each of ten sprints would score, with the first finisher getting 5 points, the second 3, the third 2, and the fourth 1 point. Results The race started at 20:30. The National Cycling Centre is a multipurpose cycling venue in Sportcity, Manchester, United Kingdom. It includes an indoor Manchester Velodrome, Velodrome and a BMX racing, BMX arena and outdoor mountain biking, mountain bike trials. It also has offices for British Cycling, the governing body for cycling in Britain. Nicole Cooke
Nicole Denise Cooke, MBE (born 13 April 1983) is a Welsh former professional road bicycle racer and Commonwealth, Olympic and World road race champion. At Beijing in 2008 she became the first British woman to win a Gold Olympic medal in any cycling discipline. Cooke announced her retirement from the sport on 14 January 2013 at the age of 29. Early life Cooke was born in Swansea, and grew up in Wick, Vale of Glamorgan. She attended Brynteg Comprehensive School in Bridgend, where she gained the Rankin Prize, awarded each year for the highest academic achievement by a girl at GCE A Levels. Career Professional career Heal originally took up cycling when she was at Birmingham University as a means of transportation. Frances Newstead (born 7 May 1973) is an English road and track cyclist from Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Biography Newstead took up cycling at Huddersfield University, where she studied sports science, commuting by bike before joining the university mountain bike club. She was spotted by coach Val Rushworth at Manchester velodrome while a riding the track league. She rode World Cup events in 2003 and 2004, and the 2002 UCI road world championships. Newstead competed in the road race and time trial at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, finishing eighth in both. She has worked alongside Chris Boardman, she is also a coach and worked with British Cycling's Talent Team in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Sarah Elizabeth Ulmer (born 14 March 1976) is a New Zealand former competitive cyclist. She is the first New Zealander to win an Olympic cycling gold medal, which she won in the 3km individual pursuit at the 2004 Athens Olympics setting a world record. After the 2004 Olympics, she held the Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championship Pursuit titles, and the records for those events. Katherine (Katey) Bates (born 18 May 1982 in Sydney) is an Australian former track and road cyclist. A multiple national champion, Bates rode as a professional since 2002. Katey's career highlights included Australian Road Race Champion in 2006, World Points Race Champion in 2007 and Commonwealth Games champion in 2002 and 2006.
