Custos Rotulorum
''Custos rotulorum'' (; plural: ''custodes rotulorum''; Latin for "keeper of the rolls", ) is a civic post that is recognised in the United Kingdom (except Scotland) and in Jamaica. England, Wales and Northern Ireland The ''custos rotulorum'' is the keeper of an English, Welsh and Northern Irish county's records and, by virtue of that office, the highest civil officer in the county. The position is now largely ceremonial. The appointment lay with the Lord Chancellor until 1545, but is now exercised by the Crown, under the Royal sign-manual, and is usually held by a person of rank. The appointment has been united with that of the lord-lieutenancy of the county throughout England since 1836. The ''custos rotulorum'' of Lancashire was formerly appointed by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and that of County Durham vested in the Bishop of Durham until the abolition of its palatine rights. Suffolk
Suffolk () is a ceremonial county of England in East Anglia. It borders Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south; the North Sea lies to the east. The county town is Ipswich; other important towns include Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, and Felixstowe which has one of the largest container ports in Europe. The county is low-lying but can be quite hilly, especially towards the west. It is also known for its extensive farming and has largely arable land with the wetlands of the Broads in the north. Humphrey Wingfield
Sir Humphrey Wingfield (died 1545) was an English lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons of England between 1533 and 1536. Early life He was the twelfth son of Sir John Wingfield of Letheringham, Suffolk, by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John FitzLewis of West Horndon, Essex; Sir Richard Wingfield (1469–1525) and Sir Robert Wingfield were his brothers. Humphrey was educated at Gray's Inn, where he was elected Lent Reader in 1517. He had been on the commission of the peace both for Essex and Suffolk since 1509 at least. Career Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk was a cousin of the Wingfields, Humphrey being one of his trustees. and probably through his influence Wingfield was introduced at court. In 1515 he was appointed chamberlain to Suffolk's wife Mary Tudor, Queen of France, and was apparently resident in her house. John Gosnold
John Gosnold (by 1507 – 1554), of Otley, Suffolk and London, was an English lawyer and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich in 1547 and in October 1553. Early life John was the son of Robert Gosnold and Agnes daughter of Agnes, of John Hill. Legal career He trained as a lawyer being admitted to Gray's Inn in 1526 and was called to the bar in 1528. In 1532 his legal services were engaged by Thomas Wentworth, 1st Baron Wentworth. Family life He married Katherine, the daughter of Sir Thomas Blennerhasset. William Cordell
Sir William Cordell (about 1522 – 17 May 1581) of Melford Hall in the parish of Long Melford, Suffolk, was an English lawyer, landowner, administrator and politician who held high offices under both the Catholic Queen Mary I and the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. Early life Born about 1522, he was the eldest son of John Cordell (died 1553), from Edmonton in Middlesex, and his wife Emma (died 1554), daughter of Henry Webb who lived at Kimbolton in Huntingdonshire. His younger brother Edward also became a lawyer and politician. His father was principal aide to Sir William Clopton (died 1531), an influential lawyer at Lincoln's Inn and owner of Kentwell Hall at Long Melford in Suffolk. Probably brought up in the Clopton household, at age 16 he was sent to study law at Lincoln's Inn, being called to the bar very young in 1544.J.H. Clement Heigham
Sir Clement Higham, or Heigham, (pre-1495 – 9 March 1571) of Barrow, Suffolk, was an English lawyer and politician, a Speaker of the House of Commons in 1554, and Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1558–1559. A loyal Roman Catholic, he held various offices and commissions under Queen Mary, and was knighted in 1555 by King Philip, but withdrew from politics after the succession of Queen Elizabeth I in 1558.M.K. Robert Jermyn
Sir Robert Jermyn DL (1539–1614) was a prominent East Anglian landowner and magistrate, of strongly reformist views in religion, who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1584 and 1589. Jermyn was the eldest surviving son of Sir Ambrose Jermyn and his first wife Anne Heveningham, daughter of George Heveningham. He may have been a student of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1550. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1561. In 1577 he succeeded to his father's Suffolk estates and seat at Rushbrooke Hall, Suffolk's largest moated Tudor mansion. Around this time he was brought onto the commission of the peace. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1578 and hosted the Queen at Rushbrooke during her visit to Suffolk the same year. Thomas Howard, 1st Earl Of Suffolk
Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, (24 August 156128 May 1626) of Audley End House in the parish of Saffron Walden in Essex, and of Suffolk House near Westminster, a member of the House of Howard, was the second son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk by his second wife Margaret Audley, the daughter and eventual sole heiress of Thomas Audley, 1st Baron Audley of Walden, of Audley End. Early life and marriages After the death of his mother on 10 January 1564, the infant Thomas inherited the manor of Saffron Walden and other Audley properties. While imprisoned in the Tower before his execution in 1572, his father urged him to marry his stepsister Mary Dacre, the daughter of Thomas Dacre, 4th Baron Dacre and Elizabeth Leybourne, the Duke's third wife. Theophilus Howard, 2nd Earl of Suffolk, (13 August 15843 June 1640) was an English nobleman and politician. Born at the family estate of Saffron Walden, he was the son of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, by his second wife, Catherine Knyvet of Charlton, North Wiltshire, Wiltshire, Charlton, and succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Suffolk and 2nd Baron Howard de Walden in 1626, along with some other of his father's offices, including the Lord-lieutenant, lord-lieutenancy of the counties of Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Suffolk, Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Cambridge and Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Dorset.
